Obituaries and death notices, especially those written years ago, are not just a valuable source of names, dates and places for a genealogist. Grouped together as they are here they become an intimate social history of a community, written by journalists who usually knew the deceased and their families.

Some are tributes to pioneers, patriarchs, pastors and parents whose life stories are the history of Graham County. Others are tender remembrances of children, women who died in childbirth or those struck down by disease, unfortuante accidents or natural disasters. There are stories honoring the supreme acts of sacrifice of local young men and women who died overseas in distant wars as well as reports of sensational crimes that live on in story for generations.

ALBERTSON, Amelia
The Hill City Times -- Hill City, October 11, 2000
Amelia ALBERTSON, 101 years of age, died Thursday, September 7, 2000, at Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill City, Kansas. She was born March 15, 1899, in rural Graham County, Kansas, to John Peter and Katherine Margaret MICHAELIS, both of Volga German heritage. She attended elementary school at Spring Lake Rural School, near her home. She attended and graduated from Hill City High School in 1919. This was followed by completion of Normal Training for Teachers at Fort Hays in the summer of 1919.

She immediately began her teaching career at Millbrook School, where she taught for 3 years. She also taught for 2 years at Sunrise School, and was called upon to teach 2 years at Glendale School during World War II. Amelia married Henry C. ALBERTSON on April 16, 1921. They had celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, as well as their sixtieth anniversary. He died on October 17, 1983.

She was a member of the Hill City United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the UMW Quilting Group, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Research Club, and was a former member of E.H.U.Amelia had many interests, among which were her love of reading, cooking, baking cookies, making watermelon pickles and choke cherry jelly, baking homemade bread and rolls, and most of all, enjoying all the time possible with any or all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Curtis, of Tucson, Arizona, his wife, Janet, and their children: Bruce and his wife, Terry; Laura and her husband Mike, and their children, Casey, Mitchell and Mica; and Brent and his wife, Margaret, and their son, Brian; and a daughter, Carol TREXLER of Hill City, Kansas, and her husband, Allen, and their children, Brad and his wife, Kim, and their daughters, Meredith and Brittney; and Lynn BRUTON of Norton and her husband, Ty, and their children Gabriel and Keali.

The funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 13, 2000, at the Spencer Chapel in Hill City, Kansas. Internment was at Prairie Home Cemetery, rural Graham County, Kansas. submitted by Jessie Thompson


BALLOU, Jennifer Diane (Freda DESBIEN)

Jennifer Diane (Freda Desbien) Ballou, age 62, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the St. Anthony Campus of the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. The daughter of Charlotte (GRANT) and the late Claude DESBIEN, she was born on October 31, 1937, in rural Palco, Kansas.
She was a secondary school teacher and had lived in Colorado for many years before moving back to Palco in May, 2000

Jennifer was preceded in death by her father, Claude.
She is survived by her mother, Charlotte DESBIEN, of Palco; a son, Lieutenant Commander Michael E. PURCELL, United States Navy, and his wife, Dierdre, Chesapeake, Virginia; two brothers, Don DESBIEN of Palco, KS, and Larry DESBIEN of Ponca City, Oklahoma; two sisters, Mary KNOLL of Palco, KS, and Carol O'SHEA of West Milford, New Jersey; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2000, at the St. Joseph Catholic church, Damar, Kansas. Officiating were Father Donald McCarthy and Father Bill Kilian. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Palco, Kansas. submitted by Jessie Thompson


BASHFORD, Vern D.
Hill City Times -- Hill City, September 20, 2000
Vern D. BASHFORD, 81, died Monday, September 11, 2000, at Thornton Place in Topeka, Kansas. He was born July 11, 1919 to Chet and May (GNAGY) BASHFORD. He attended grade school across the road from his parents' farmstead, north of Morland, and he graduated from Morland High School in 1938. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. On October 12, 1943, he married LaVone DUNNING of Hill City.

Vern farmed north of Morland for forty years and later worked at Farmers Lumber Company, Inc. in Hill City, Kansas. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Morland, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Quinter Castle Rock Tumbleweeds and several other square dance clubs. He had been a 4-H leader, church board member, former Goshen School District Board Member, and had been on the Graham County Fair Board at one time.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jerilyn GARRISON, and her husband, Jim, of LaCrescenta, California, and Eileen BASHFORD, M.D., of Kansas City, Missouri; and three sons, Dave, and his wife, Jane, of Richfield, Kansas; Alan and his fiancee, Pam HARRISON, of Wichita, Kansas; and Kelly of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren; Rebecca HANNA and husband, Cole, of Richfield, Kansas; David BASHFORD and his wife, Crystal, of Richfield, Kansas; Tabetha SMITH and her husband, Mike, of Norton, Kansas; Timothy BASHFORD and wife, Angela, of San Diego, California; and Kris, Kirt and Koty BASHFORD of Knoxville, Tennessee; six great-grandchildren: Nicole HANNA of Hugoton, Kansas; Kara OWENS, McKenzie and Jayden Eileen HANNA, and Preston BASHFORD of Richfield, Kansas; and one great-great-grandchild, Nickolas James GOLD of Hugoton, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Annette.

Funeral services were Friday, September 15, 2000, at 2:00 p.m. at the Morland United Methodist Church, Morland, Kansas, with Pastors Mehl CRUIT and Terry ALLISON officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Hill City, Kansas, with memorials suggested to the Morland United Methodist Church or the donor's choice. submitted by Jessie Thompson


BELLEAU, Marilda

Marilda BELLEAU was born, January 17, 1903, at Damar, Kansas, to Joe and Delia (ST. PETER) BRIN. She passed away on Monday, August 28, 2000. at the Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays, Kansas, at the age of 97 years, seven months, and eleven days. On February 22, 1925, she was united in marriage with William J. BELLEAU in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar, Kansas. He passed away in 1970.

A longtime area resident and homemaker, Marilda was a resident of Sealye House in Hill City for one year and eight months. She loved to play bridge, to read, and to crochet. Marilda was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic church in Hill City. She was also a member of the Altar Society and a member of the bridge club.

Survivors include: two daughters, Alvena WEBB of Scottsdale, Arizona and Ida BERNATT of Landcaster, California; one son, Nels BELLEAU of Hill City; a sister, Olive Marcotte, Hays; eight grandsons and one granddaughter; eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Marilda will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends for many years to come.

A wake service is planned for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 30, 2000, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hill City. Funeral services will also be held at the local church and are planned for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2000. Officiating are Father Don MCCARTHY and Father Bill KILIAN. BIRD, John
Hill City New Era, Hill City, Graham County, Kansas -- Thursday, September 3, 1908
We learn just as we go to press that John BIRD died last night. He had been having heart trouble for some time and it is thought that this trouble caused his death. He was at the home of Mr. WORCHESTER, his son-in-law, when the end came. Mr. BRID was one of the old timers of the country, a man who enjoyed the friendship, honor and esteem of all.
Hill City New Era, Hill City, Graham County, Kansas -- Thursday, September 10, 1908
"In Memroriam"... John Bird, born near Millersburg, Ohio, April 9th, 1836, died September 2nd, 1908, of heart failure in his 73rd year. Mr. BIRD resided in Ohio until about the time of his majority when in the year 1858 he moved west to DeKalb County, Missouri. One year later he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel PRITCHARD. To this union came seven children all of whom, save one son, are still living. In 1862 the deceased enlisted in the union cause, becoming a member of the 1st Mo. Cavalry, M. S. M. and saw three years of service, during this time, by reason of the hardships and exposure incidental to a soldiers life, he lost his health and it was never more than partially regained. Mr. BIRD was one of those who did all in their power to protect the ill fated town of Lawrence at the time of the Quantrell raid. In the year 1879 Mr. BIRD came to Graham County and has since resided here. He was a sincere and consistent member of the Christian church.



BROOKS, Mrs. Ross (Margaret Oakie CLUBB)
The Morland Monitor, Morland, Graham County, Kansas -- Thursday April 24, 1952
t's hard for surviving relatives and friends to find the silver lining to the cloud of gloom which enveloped the entire town and community when it was learned Oakie BROOKS had passed to the "Great Beyond." Margaret Oakie CLUBB, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram CLUBB was born September 22, 1889 in Graham County and departed this life Friday, April 18, 1952 at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 26 days.

Oakie, as she was familiarly known, had been in failing health for a number of years, yet her sudden and unexpected departure was a great sorrow to her firends and a crushing shock to her husband and relatives.Oakie was reared on the western plains of Kansas and was of the pioneer stock. She received her education in the schools of Graham county. Being musically inclined she attended Bethany College at Lindsburg, Kansas, to further develop her musical talent.

She was married to Ross BROOKS December 29, 1917 at the Methodist Parsonage in Morland, Kansas when Ross was in the service at Little Rock, Arkansas, Oakie was with him there. When 14 years old she began as a clerk in the G. W. Stober store in Morland. Her husband being engaged in the General Mercantile Business in Morland. Oakie was well qualified to be his helpful companion, working side by side with him down through the eventful years of their married life, assuming with him the responsibilities of their business.

Ross and Oakie endured the hardships of pioneers, walking down the pathway of life during the years of adversity and in days of plenty with Oakie's artistic talent. They developed a beautiful home in Morland. Having no children of thier own they expressed a parental love to their nephews and nieces. They provided a home for their nephew William LIBHART while he attended school in Morland and when her little nephew John Ross LIBHART suffered the loss of his hand, Oakie was so distressed she never fully recovered from the shock.

Mrs. Nancy CLUBB, Oakie's mother, being an invalid for many years, was cared for in the home by Ross and Oakie. All these acts of kindness were expressions of generosity and love -- She has been a loving wife, dutiful daughter, a devoted sister and aunt and a true frield.

While visiting relatives in Kentucky, she united with the Berea Christian Church near Bethelem, Kentucky in 1910. Oakie's great grandfather donated the ground and built and maintained this church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Morland Kansas.
Oakie was serious minded, modest in manner, fundamental in principal, cautious in conduct and clean in character. One of her strongest characteristics was to always speak well of others. Sherefrained from gossip, abuse and sarcasm. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband Ross of the home, one sister, Mrs. Sophronia LIBHART of Ft. Lupton, Colorado, one brother Lamar CLUBB of Zurick, Kansas, four nephews, two nieces, 8 grand nephews, seven grand nieces, two great grand nephews and a wide circle of friends.

Her father and mother and 4 brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Morland, Kansas, Monday afternoon, April 21, 1952, conducted by Rev. Copley. The quartette composed of Mrs. Edna TEBO, Mrs. Catherine TABER, Mrs. Ardith GOODROW and Mrs. Charlene ANDERSON, sang these beautiful hymns "Precious Jewels, Whispering Hope and Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. John Born was pianist. The church was filled with old time friends and neighbors who had gathered to pay their last sad tribute and respect to this beloved friend.

The pall bearers were G. B. HARRELL, C. D. HEDGE, T. L. SMITH, J. F. LUDLOW, O. F. HUNSICKER and Roy BAIRD. At the close of the service, the impressive funeral ceremony of the Order of the Eastern Star was given. A large concourse of friends and nieghbors followed the remains to their last resting place in the family plot in the Hill City cemetery.

Relatives who came from a distance for Mrs. Oakie BROOK's funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence LIBHART, Mr. and Mrs. Laverne LIBHART, Mrs. Vivian JEUNEHOMME all of Fort Lupton, Colorado, Mrs. and Mrs. Clair LIBHART and Richard of Pueblo, Colorado, Mr. and Mrs. Milton CLUBB of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Ada EUTSLER of Topeka, Lamar CLUBB of Zurich and Ada CLUBB of Hoxie.

Died... at her home in Hill City, Friday morning January 1st at one o'clock a.m., Mrs. Susan A. BUFFINGTON, age 46. Mrs. BUFFINGTON leaves a husband and four children to mourn her untimely departure two sons and two daughters; her maiden name was PETTET [compiler's note: Check the article right after this obituary]. She was raised in Marshall County, Illinois, married to Abraham BUFFINGTON, October 16, 1864, moved to eastern Kansas in 1870, and moved to Graham County in the spring of '87..... Rev. S. CAIN, Sarah Mable SMITH

Sarah Mable SMITH was born August 15, 1833, in Morgan County, Ohio, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas STUCK, at Lucerne, Kansas, September 3, 1916, aged 83 years, 19 days. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, August 10, 1844, and always lived a consistent Christian life. She was married to Lawrence B. CAIN February 13, 1851. To this union seven children were born, four having died in infancy. Those who survive are: Jobe P. CAIN of Morland, Kansas; Mrs. Thomas STUCK, Lucerne, Kansas; and Mrs. Nora R. WEDLOCK of Lincoln, Nebraska. She also leaves ten grandchildren, two brothers, Daniel W. SMITH of Morland, Kansas, and Thomas H. SMITH of Kensington, Kansas.

CLUBB, Mrs. Nancy
[Morland Monitor?], Morland, Graham County, Kansas, Thursday, December 27, 1928
Nancy ADAMS was born at Franklinton, Henry county, Kentucky, December 19th, 1856, and departed this life December 16, 1928, aged 72 years, 11 months and 27 days. At the age of fourteen she united with the Baptist church at Franklinton, Kentucky where she has retained her membership all through the years.

She was married to Hiram S. CLUBB on December 2, 1872. To this union was born 7 children, Henry, William Flury, Sophronia, Lamar, Oakie, Elzy and Merril [Merrell]. In February 1879 Mr. and Mrs. CLUBB came to Graham county, Kansas, and settled in Hill City. In May of that year William Flury died, his being the first body placed in the Hill City cemetery.

During their residence in Hill City they ran a store, later selling out, and moving to Gettysburg, where they again engaged in the merchantile business. Mrs. CLUBB saw the lively times incident to the founding of the county seat at Hill City. She went through all the hardships of Graham county pioneer life.

In 1899 death again entered this family, taking Henry, Elzy, and Merrell. In 1907 Mr. CLUBB departed this life, leaving this mother and three children to carry on the farming 5 1/2 mile northeast of Morland. In the fall of 1913 she moved to Morland where she has lived ever since. In 1922 she took sick with influenza which left her in bad health, later becoming an invalid, confined to her home and chair for six years. Though suffering more than anyone knew, she never complained and everything was for the best with her. She was a woman of sterling qualities and a true Christian character.

She leaves to mourn her departure, two daughters, Mrs. Sophronia LIBHART of Formoso, Kansas, Mrs. Okie BROOKS, of Morland, Kansas and one some, Lamar CLUBB of Penokee, Kansas, one sister and brother of Bethlehem, Kentucky, five grandchildren, William, LaVerne, Clair and Vivian LIBHART, and Mildred CLUBB.

COKELEY, Glenn "Moon"

Glenn "Moon" COKELEY, 72, of Hill City passed away Thursday, December 30, 1999 at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City. He was born December 16, 1927 at Gridley, Kansas, the son of Clarence Nelson ad Hazel Irene (POVENMIRE) COKELEY, Sr.

Moon was a heavy equipment operator and a longtime Hill City resident. He married Pearl Walters HUGHLEY on May 2, 1963. She died on March 4, 1992. Mr. COKELEY was also preceded in death by his father; his wife; one sister; one brother; his step-son-in-law; and one step-grandson.

He is survived by his mother, Hazel I. COKELEY of Palco, Kansas; a step-daughter, Joan HUTTON of Hill City; two brothers, Clarence "Nut" COKELEY, Jr. of Liberal and Ronald COKELEY of Hill City; three sisters Illa BALTHAZOR, Palco, Charlene MCBRIDE of Austin, Texas, and Jo Ann PHILLIPS of WaKeeney; seven step-grandchildren and a host of step-great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at Spencer Chapel of Hill City with Howard Guidry officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Palco; and memorials were suggested to the Graham County Hospital.

EICHMAN, Herman

Funeral services for Herman EICHMAN, age 79, of Palco, were at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2000, at the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel in Plainville with Reverend Randy HARRELL officiating. Mr. EICHMAN passed away Saturday, January 29, 2000 at the Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, in Hays, Kansas.

He was born August 7, 1920 in Damar, Kansas, the son of Fred and Ethel (HEDGE) EICHMAN. He was a graduate of Palco High School and attended Ft. Hays State University. Mr. EICHMAN was a pumper for OKMAR Oil Company for many years, retiring in 1985. He was a W.W.II Army veteran. Mr. EICHMAN was a member of the American Legion in Hill City, the VFW in Plainville, and a lifelong member of the 12th Armored Division.

On August 6, 1950, he married Alberta ACHESON in WaKeeney. She passed away September 14, 1974. Other survivors include two daughters, Joyce EICHMAN of Plainville and Linda HOLLIDAY of Hays; two sons, Harold EICHMAN of Speed and Ivan EICHMAN of Palco; two brothers, Cleo EICHMAN of Palco and Clarence EICHMAN of Damar; sisters, Lila BALDWIN of Zurich, Ellenora MEYER of Palco, Betty Jean Kay of Beaverton, Oregon; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Lawrence EICHMAN; and two sisters, Iola EICHMAN and Beulah TURNER; and a great-grandchild.

Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Palco, with arrangements by Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Rooks County Nursing Home in Plainville and may be sent in care of the chapel. submitted by Jessie Thompson


FRANZ, Mayme Ethel

Mayme Ethel FRANZ, 90, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2000, at the Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill City, Kansas.
Mayme was born on July 19, 1910, at Plato, Missouri, the daughter of Jacob Calvin and Melissa Viola (BURRIS) HUTSELL. A homemaker, she was a longtime area resident. Mayme married William M. FRANZ on August 19, 1927 in Shidler, Oklahoma. He died in 1971. Mrs. FRANZ was a member of the Hill City First Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include a son, George W. FRANZ, Littleton, Colorado; two daughters, Dorothy GOFFINSKI and Melissa Jane SCOTT, both of Hill City; twenty-three grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. FRANZ was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, four sisters, three children; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 21, 2000, at 1:00 p.m. at the Spencer Chapel in Hill City, Kansas with Pastor Steve FULKS officiating. Burial was on Friday, September 22, 2000 in the Littleton Cemetery in Littleton, Colorado. submitted by Jessie Thompson


FULLER, Peggy L.

Peggy L. FULLER of Strong City, Kansas died suddenly on Monday, November 29, 1999, at Morris County Hospital, Council Grove. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 4, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Rick Smith officiated.
Ms. Fuller was cremated and a memorial, graveside service was held at Mount Olive Cemetery, Bogue, at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 1999

Peggy Lee HENDERSON, the daughter of A.J. and Ethel NEVINS HENDERSON, was born September 20, 1959, at Hill City, Kansas. She married Eulious FULLER in 1976 at Hill City. They were divorced.
Peggy was a Certified Nurse's Aide for many years. She was employed at Holiday Resort & Rehabilitation Center at Emporia. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cottonwood Falls.

She is survived by a son, Isaiah FULLER-CONWAY of the home; one daughter, Patricia ROBINSON of Aurora, Colorado; two brothers, Charles NEVINS of Strong City and Verland (Bubba) HENDERSON of Cottonwood Falls; and three grand-children.

GODDARD, Neal
Hill City New Era -- Hill City, Thursday, September 10, 1908
In Colorado, Saturday last, Neal GODDARD. Mr. GODDARD had been ailing for a long time and this summer was taken to the mountains with the hope that a change of climate might help him. He grew worse and was being brought back when his demise occured. A wife and two young children are left. Burial took place Sunday.
The Hill City New Era -- Hill City, Thursday, September 10, 1908
Died: Friday morning September 4th, 1908, C. H. GODDARD, age 35 years, 2 months and 4 days. At Burlington, Colorado, where he had gone last June, in hopes of benefitting his health, having been a sufferer from that dread disease, consumption, for several months. But to no avail as he steadily seclined til he fell asleep as peacefully as a tired child on his mother's arm, to sleep til the resurrection morning. The body was brought back to Morland Saturday morning, accompanied by the stricken wife and his brother, Eddie. Sunday afternoon Rev. HARPER delivered a comforting and touching sermon at the deceased's residence and a very large concourse of sympathizing friends followed the remains to the place of interment in the Anderson Cemetery. The relatives, wife and children, mother, brothers and sisters have the sypathy of a large circle of friends in this sad hour of bereavement. The deceased was one of those men, that possessed those sterling virtues that endered him to all with whom he came in contact, in the daily walks of life being generous to a fault, quick to extend a helping had, where needed and a kindly smile and pleasant word for all. A model husband and father, and a dutiful son. During his illness he seemed to envince no thought for himself, but was deeply concerned for the young wife and two babies, a little girl of 3 and a little boy of one...



GORDON, James Oscar "Jamie"

James Oscar "Jamie" Gordon, 49, died Wednesday, February 2, 2000, as a result of a one-vehicle accident north of Ellis, Kansas.

A Palco resident, Jamie was born June 1, 1950 in Rose Bud, Arkansas. His birth parents were Benjamin Franklin and Disie (MALLONEE) McCARROLL; and he was lovingly adopted into the home of James Laverne and Carolyn (BROWN) GORDON, when he was eight years of age.

A longtime area resident, he was a Pizza Hut manager and a member of the Red Line Church of God.
Jamie was preceded in death by his birth father, Benjamin Franklin McCARROLL; his brother, Robert McCARROLL; and his grandparents, Marvin and Elsie GORDON, Ellen GRINDLE, and Carrie MALLONEE.

Survivors include two sons, Justin and David, Newark, Delaware; a daughter, Jennifer GORDON, Philadelphia; his father, James GORDON, and wife, Shirley, Wakeeney; his mother, Carolyn GRINDLE, and husband, Max, Bogue; his birth mother, Disie McCARROLL, in Arkansas; his grandparents, Oscar and Alberta BROWN of Mesa, Arizona; three brothers, Philip and Richard McCARROLL, Rose Bud, Arkansas, and David GORDON, Mulvane; a step-brother, Terry GRINDLE, Hill City; five sisters, Brenda HENSLEY, Kingston, Missouri, Rhonda ERDMAN, Morrison, Colorado, Helen ARNOLD of Bates City, Missouri, and Pat DOWIS and Barbara COLE, both of Palco; and a step-sister, Susan ROME of Hays.
Also surviving are twelve nephews, fifteen nieces, two great-nieces, and three great-nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at the Red Line Church of God in rural Palco, Kansas. Officiating were Rev. Dwite Brown, Rev. Paul Ninemire, and Leroy Walz. Burial was in the Morlan Township Cemetery, rural Palco; and memorials were suggested to the Red Line Church of God. Arrangements were by Spencer Chapel of Hill City. submitted by Jessie Thompson


HALL, Chris

"Killed by His Own Gun"... On last Saturday at noon Chris HALL, a colored man living north of Nicodemus, was instantly killed by the accidental discharge of a gun which he was carrying. The muzzle of the gun was close to his face and the and the force of the explosion tore off of the entire front part of his head. HALL and a young man, HALL's son, had started for town in a farm wagon and HALL was carrying the gun between his knees, the stock of the gun resting upon the floor of the wagon bed. And while they were yet close to their the home the gun in some way was discharged with the fatal results mentioned.



HARRIS, Arlie Elwood Jr.

Arlie Elwood HARRIS, Jr., passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2000. 70 years of age, he was born on April 11, 1930 in Penokee, Graham County, Kansas, to Arlie Elwood HARRIS, Sr. and Eva J. NORDICK. A retired plumber with Unified School District No. 305 in Salina, he had made his home in Wichita. Funeral services included a Rosary on Wednesday, October 4, 2000 and a Funeral Mass on Thursday, October 5, 2000, both at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wichita.

Arlie is survived by his wife, Dolores A. HARRIS of the home in Wichita; a son, Ron HARRIS of Newton, Kansas; a daughter, Debra HENNING, Newton, Kansas; three step-sons, Jack DEMARS, Gladewater, Texas, and Dirk WEDDEL and Mark WEDDEL, both of Wichita, Kansas; and a step-daughter, Aleta WEDDELL of Wichita.
Also surviving are six brothers: Kenneth HARRIS, Bogue; Edward HARRIS, Eckhart, Colorado; Robert HARRIS, Scott City, Kansas; Clyde HARRIS, Marysville, Kansas; Carol HARRIS, Elmore, Oklahoma; and Raymond HARRIS, El Dorado, Kansas; and two sisters, Leona SAUER, Schulte, Kansas, and Mary POTTERF, Hill City, Kansas; as well as numerous grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma HARRIS; his parents, Arlie Elwood HARRIS, Sr. and Eva NORDICK; a son, Gregory HARRIS; and three brother, Adolph HARRIS, Donald HARRIS, and Claude HARRIS.

Harry Carl HYDE, 74, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2000, at the Geary County Hospital in Junction City, Kansas. He was born January 16, 1926 in rural Sheridan County, Kansas, the son of Harry E. and Annie Faye (MILLER) HYDE.
A longtime local resident, Carl was a retired truck driver. he had married Ruth SAGER on April 17, 1951 in Lenora, Kansas, and she survives. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hill City, Kansas.

Carl is survived by his wife, Ruth, of the home in Hill City; two sons, Carl Eugene HYDE of Hill City and Gary Lee Hyde of Penokee; four daughters, Utanna Mae ASHBAUGH, Hill City; Linda Sue HYDE, Great Bend; Sharon Kaye STUIVE, Wichita; and Charlotte Renee DAVIDSON, Junction City; one brother, Elmer HYDE of Cambridge, Nebraska; and two sisters, Barbara GOFF of Hill City and Katie Marie MANIS of Wichita. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; and infant brother; and by one daughter, Donna Marie ABROSIER.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday September 23, at Spencer Chapel in Hill City with Rev. Charles CARTER officiating. Burial was in the Morland Cemetery, Morland, kansas, with all arrangements by Spencer Chapel of Hill City. KARNS, Hazel Belle

Hazel Belle KARNS, 97, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2000, at Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill City, Kansas. She was born on October 29, 1902 at Samouth, Illinois, the daughter of Lycurges and Florence (FINLEY) JONES.
A resident of this area since 1979, she was a retired bookkeeper and homemaker. She married Alfred R. "Barney" KARNS on July 31, 1921 in Ada, Kansas. He died on September 23, 1983.
Hazel was a member of the Ada Baptist Church, Ada, Kansas.

Survivors include a son, James L. KARNS of Plainville, Kansas; and two daughters, LaDonna HENSLEY of Hill City and Sherrill KARNS of Redding, California. Also surviving Mrs. Karns are a brother, Gladwyn JONES of Salina, Kansas; a sister, Gladys GASAWAY of Hill City; eight grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. KARNS was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Roger Max KARNS; one brother; and one sister.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2000, at the Ada Baptist Church, Ada, Kansas, with Pastor Ron WALKER officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Ada, Kansas. KENYON, Ivan R.

Ivan R. KENYON, 90, passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2000, at Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill City, Kansas. He was born March 11, 1910 in rural Graham County, Kansas, the son of Benedict CLAUDSLEY and Belle (BOYS) KENYON. A retired farmer/stockman, Ivan was a lifetime Bogue area resident. He married Delena CONYAC, May 14, 1934, in Damar, Kansas, and she survives.

Ivan was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar Knights of Columbus, Men's Service Club of Bogue, Farm Bureau, and a founding member of the Bogue Pinochler Club. He had been a member of the Bogue School Board.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Delena KENYON, of Hill City; two sons, Gary KENYON of Great Bend, Kansas and Alan KENYON of Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters Marilyn Kay POZAS of Glendale, Arizona and Jolene ALEXANDER of Ottawa, Kansas; one sister, Eleanore EIKMAN, Mesa, Arizona; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parent; three brothers, Everette, Melvin, and Wilbur; and one sister, Mary STEPHEN.

Funeral services were Thursday, September 28, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar with Father KILIAN officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Damar, Kansas. Memorials were suggested to Dawson Place in Hill City. submitted by Jessie Thompson


KLINE, Mrs. Hannah BOYD

Mrs. Hannah BOYD KLINE, wife of Charles KLINE of Allodium Township, died September 11, 1916, aged 69 years, six months and nine days. The deceased was born in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. At the close of the Civil War she married Charles KLINE, a Pennsylvania soldier, and soon afterwards the young couple joined the procession of pioneer folks seeking homesteads in the free lands of the West. Mr. and Mrs. KLINE settled in Allodium Township, Graham County, in 1878 and this land has been their family homestead ever since. Survivors include her husband, her sons, William, James, Samuel, Frank and Warren, and her daughters, Mrs. John S. DAWSON, Mrs. Edward TEEL, Mrs. Joseph WINTER, and Mrs. Chalmer TEEL, all well known Allodium Township folks of the past and present. She was laid to rest in Lenora Cemetery.

KLOEFKORN, Penny (VEATCH)

Penny KLOEFKORN is with the Lord after peacefully ending her nine-year battle with cancer on August 22, 2000, at the Wyoming Medical Center with her immediate family by her side. A celebration of Penny's life, officiated by Pastor John SPEAR at Highland Park Community Church, took place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2000. Penny asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Highland Park Community Church for Make a Wish Foundation and Hospice.

Penny was born into the lives of Gerrell and Joyce (MOWRY) VEATCH on April 3, 1958 in Palco, Kansas. In high school, Penny was active in all sports and graduated in 1976. She went on to play college basketball. She married Steve KEITH and from that union were born two beautiful daughters, Shannon Leigh and Reagen Lyne. After moving to Casper, Wyoming, Penny and Steve divorced.

Penny, while working at Conoco, was involved in volleyball, softball, bowling, and Women of the Word Bible Study, but more than anything, Penny was always involved in the passion of her life, loving people. She married her soul mate, Gary KLOEFKORN, in the spring of 1989.

In Women of the Word, as she grew in the faith and grace of God, she became a magnetic light that touched every person's life she met. Penny found the good in everyone and found the beauty of life and living in the most basic of things. There was never a bad day for Penny, and she devoted her life to the happiness and goodwill of her friends, family, and acquaintances. Penny was a bridge to a better life to all whose lives she touched.

Penny is survived by her beloved husband and truest love, Gary; her beautiful and loving daughters, Shannon and Reagen; her step-family, Sheila, Revae, Gina, Todd, and Jackie; her parents, Gerrel VEATCH and Joyce GIROT; her sisters, Rocky, Tammy, and Brenda; and her brother, Mark. She is also survived by countless family, friends, and loved ones. Penny remains in the hearts of everyone she ever touched. Her spirit lives forever. submitted by Jessie Thompson


KNOLL, John P. "Brandy"

John P. "Brandy" Knoll, age 78, died Thursday, February 3, 2000, at the Graham County Hospital, Hill City, Kansas
He was born October 14, 1921, in St. Peter, Kansas, to Peter J. and Rose (GABEL) KNOLL. He never married, and was a resident of the Dawson Place Nursing Home, Hill City, Kansas, for two months.
Brandy spent his lifetime in the Hill City area. He attended school in St. Peter, Kansas and was a 1942 graduate of Morland High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II.

He worked for the Sonny Goodrow Farm, for Tebo Implement, and for the Graham County HighwayDepartment, having retired in 1987. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hill City.
Survivors include two brothers, Nick KNOLL of Hill City, and William KNOLL, Denver, Colorado; and five sisters, Mary Ann KNOLL of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dorothy JOHNSON of Dallas, Texas, Irene KNOLL and Rose KNOLL, both of Hill City, and Mildred BOTTOMLY of Hays.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Anton KNOLL and Alfred KNOLL; and by one sister, Sophie KNOLL.

His body was cremated and graveside services will be held at a later date at the Hill City Cemetery, Hill City, Kansas. Cline's Mortuary of Hays was in charge of arrangements; and memorials were suggested to the Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill City. submitted by Jessie Thompson


LOVELADY, A. J.

A. J. LOVELADY was born in St. Louis, Missouri, February 20, 1841, and died September 10, 1916, aged 75 years, six months, 18 days at his home in Penokee. In early life he moved to Iowa. During the Civil War he spent three years in service to his country. He was wounded at Gunston, Mississippi, in 1865 near the close of the war. He came to Kansas 35 years ago. He married Frances CHAPMAN in 1866. They had five children: Mrs. Grace CLEM, Los Angeles; Mrs. Josephine LOTRIDGE, San Francisco, Calif.; George LOVELADY, Penokee, Kansas; Mrs. Ada MARRENGER, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Myrtle WEYAND, Phoenix, Ariz. His wife, son, George and daughter, Nyrtle [sic!], wer at his bedside at the hour of his death.

MAGEE, Dora M.
The Hill City Republican -- Wednesday, August 13, 1890
Dora M. MAGEE, wife of L. W. MAGEE of this city, died Thursday morning at four o'clock, of typhoid fever complicated with chronic troubles. Her age was 28 years, 11 months and 23 days. She leaves three children aged 8 years, 6 years and 7 months respectively. The body was shipped to Pawnee City, Neb., her old home, for internment, accompanied by her husband, brother and niece. The deceased was well known and highly respected by every one who knew her, and the bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of many friends.

MEANS, Susan Elizabeth

Susan Elizabeth MEANS, the subject of this sketch, was born in Fayette Co. Kentucky, May 18, 1833. She passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Albert HEISEL, May 27, 1912 aged 79 years and 9 days. She had been confined to her bed since the 7th of last July. She bore her afflictions with great patience and was fully prepared and anxious for the change.

When three years of age she moved from Kentucky to Indiana where she grew to young woman-hood. On Nov. 14, 1850 she was married to John O. (Ochiltree) MCCLURE. To this union were born seven children three sons and four daughters. The husband, one son and one daughter have gone on before. Two sons S.M. (Samuel M.) MCCLURE and A.L. (Abraham Lincoln) MCCLURE are living in the San Luis Valley Colorado.

Two daughters Mrs. J.F. (John Fletcher) HOWARD and Mrs. J.L. (Josiah Lewis) HOWARD living in Shenandoah, Iowa and the youngest daughter, Mrs. Albert HEISEL lives near Morland Kansas.

She was converted and united with the Leland Baptist church in the year 1889 and lived a consistent Christian life until God called her home. She was one of the earliest settlers of western Kansas having moved to Graham County in the spring of 1879. In Sister MCCLURE’s death the community has lost a good neighbor, the church a faithful member and her family a true mother.

MITCHELL
Hill City New Era --- Thursday, September 17, 1908
Andrew Taber MITCHELL was born in Graysville, Ohio, November 5th, 1842, died at his home in Morland, Kansas, September 5, 1908. While yet a boy he moved wiht his parents to Elkhart, Indiana. While there, probably at the age of 14, he was converted and joined the M. E. church. When President Lincoln made a call for volunteers he was one of the frist to offer his services and spent three and one half years of his life in the Union Army. During the war he was wounded at the battle of Stony Point and lay for three days without attendance or even a drink. Such sufferings as this are not easy to understand in these days but no doubt has in part hastened the death of this soldier boy. After leaving the hospital he came home and was greeted by the terrible news that his mother was buried in the cemetery and he was motherless.

On September 5th, 1867 at Osceola, Indiana, he was united in marriage with Miss Josephine E. MOORE. To this union was born six children, Mrs. Florence WILSON of Great Bend, M. E. MITCHELL of Morland, Kansas, J. C. MITCHELL, M.D., of Waldo, Kansas, Mrs. Helen BRIDAHL of Oakley, Kansas, Frank MITCHELL of Morland, Kansas and little Eldora Etta whose body lies in the cemetery at Morland, Kansas.

About 30 years ago he began to preach in the M. E. Church and has held several important charges in this district and others. He was ordained by Bishop S. M. MERRILL at Norton, November 29, 1883. He has preached only occasionally for several years his health being poor. He was Post Master at Morland for the past two years and on account of failing health resigned and retired from the office about the first of July this year....

NANNINGA, Lynn

Lynn M. NANNINGA, 57 Lenexa, Kansas, died at his home on October 20, 2000, after a long bout with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, A.J.; his daughter, Brenda CARROLL, and her husband, Scott, of Kansas City; his son, Brian, and his wife, Jaime, of Denver, Colorado; two brothers, Terry of Axtell, Kansas and Gregg of Wichita, Kansas; and three sisters, Nancy HAZLETT of Topeka, Karen OWINGS of Hays, and Beth CLOWE of Trinidad, Colorado. Services were held on Monday, October 23, 2000, in Lenexa, with cremation to follow.
Mr. NANNINGA was also an uncle of Lori (LEEDY) PAXSON of Lindsborg and Lisa (LEEDY) BOWERS of Lee's Summit, Missouri. Both are former Hill City residents, as were their mother and step-father, Norman and Karen OWINGS. submitted by Jessie Thompson

Isabel F. JACKSON, daughter of Archibald and Catherine Jackson was born March 4, 1854 at Nauvoo, Illinois, and padded away at her home in Hill City, Kansas, June 30, 1948. On March 9, 1876, she was united in marriage to Louis F. QUINT at her home in Nauvoo. To this eight (correction eleven) children were born. Mrs. QUINT was preceded in death by her husband who passed away January 19, 1943. She is survived by two sons, Clarence D. QUINT and Elmer L. QUINT of Hill City; by six daughters, Mrs. Clara STEVENSON of the home; Mrs. Mabel LOYD of Salina, Mrs. Grace GILLILAND, Arkansas City, Mrs. Hazel PARSONS of Fort Collins, Colorado; Mrs. Jennie DUNWOODY and Mrs. Florence MORRIS of Hill City; by sixteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Before her marriage Mrs. QUINT taught school near Nauvoo. In 1884, Mr. and Mrs. QUINT moved to Beloit, Kansas and resided here until they moved to Hill City, Kansas in May, 1902. She united with the church in 1863 at Nauvoo, Illinois and was baptized in the Mississippi River. She was a member of the Community Methodist Church and of the Philathea Sunday School Class of Hill City. Mrs. QUINT was very active through the years and enjoyed working in her garden among the flowers she loved so well. She was devoted to her home and to her family. She will be greatly missed by the many friends who knew and loved her.

Louis Franklin QUINT, son of Jothan [Jotham, sp] and Mary QUINT, was born July 17, 1852, near Nauvoo, Illinois and passed away at this home in Hill City, Kansas, January 19, 1943. He grew to manhood on the same farm on which he was born... He was married to Isabell F. JACKSON at her home near Nauvoo, March 9, 1876. A few years were spent in Iowa, Nebraska; then in 1884 they came to Beloit, Kansas, living there till 1902, when he and his family moved to Graham County, settling on a farm 2 1/2 miles south of Hill City. To this union were born 8 daughter and 3 sons, 2 daughters and 1 son having preceded him in death.

He is survived by his widow, his two sons, C. D. QUINT and Elmer L. QUINT of Hill City; six daughters Mrs. Clara STEVENSON of the home, Mrs Mabel LOYD of Salina, Kansas, Mrs Grace GILLILAND of Arkansas City, Kansas, Mrs. Hazel PARSONS of Colby, Kansas and Mrs. Jennie DUNWOODY and Mrs. Florence MORRIS of Hill City; also two brothers, A. L. QUINT of Portland, Oregon and M. E. QUINT of Des Moines, Iowa; 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was very devoted to his family, always fair in ever way, teaching them to look for good and not evil. His motto was “honesty is the best policy”. Always industrious he ever found time to help in the educational program of the district and county. Eloise M. Roberts, 57 of Estes Park, Colorado, passed away on Monday, August 28, 2000. A self employed artist, Eloise was born on December 20, 1943 in Damar, Kansas, the daughter of Phillip and Yvonne ROBERTS.
She is survived by two sons, Tony MILLER of Thornton, Colorado, and Mary MILLER of Haysville, Kansas; two brothers, Maurice ROBERTS of Baker, Texas, and Jerry ROBERTS of Liberal, Kansas; a sister, Alice BARBER of Craig, Colorado; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul ROBERTS.

SAYERS, George Irvin

George Irvin SAYERS, 98, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2000, at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City, Kansas. A retired farmer-stockman, he was a longtime resident of Graham County. Mr. SAYERS was born on August 5, 1902 in Nicodemus, Kansas. He was a son of George Monroe and Mary Eliza (BATES) SAYERS. His first wife was Wilma WATSON, and she passed away in 1951. He married Bernice JONES in 1952, and she passed away in 1978. George then married Minerva WELLINGTON in 1979, and she survives. He was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Nicodemus, Kansas. He was a member of the church choir and also a deacon of the church. George was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Minerva SAYERS of Stockton, Kansas; a son, Clarence SAYERS, Nicodemus, Kansas; a daughter, Maxine PAYTON of Los Angeles, California; nine step-children; seven grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; five brothers; one sister; and one grandchild. Funeral services will be held September 16, 2000 at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Nicodemus, Kansas. Officiating will be Rev. I.G. CRAWFORD. Burial will be in the Nicodemus Cemetery. Memorials were suggested to the First Missionary Baptist church, Nicodemus, Kansas.

SCOTT, Ivan The Hill City Times -- Hill City, March 15, 2000
Ivan Scott, 84, of Hill City, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City. He was born August 14, 1915 in rural Graham County, Kansas, the son of Albert and Effie SCOTT. A lifetime resident of this area, Ivan was a farmer and served as the caretaker for the Hill City cemeteries for many, many years.

He married Leona "Sis" MAUCK on September 11, 1934 in WaKeeney, Kansas, and she died on November 14, 1988. He was a member of the Hill City Presbyterian Church. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers, and one sister. He is survived by nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held at a later date. SCOTT, Raymond Lee The Hill City Times -- Hill City, March 15, 2000
Raymond Lee Scott, 72, of Hill City, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Trego County Lemke memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. He was born on July 13, 1927 in rural Graham County, Kansas, the son of Floyd Albert and Gladys Marie (BALDWIN) SCOTT.

A lifetime resident of the area and a farmer, Raymond married Melva Maxine HUNTER on December 31, 1947 in Hill City. She died on February 14, 1988. Raymond was also preceded in death by his parents; his wife; by a daughter, Linda Sue SCOTT; and by a brother, Lloyd SCOTT.

Survivors include; four sons, James Earl SCOTT of Hill City, roger SCOTT of Arapahoe, Nebraska, Ron SCOTT of Oberlin, and Mike SCOTT of Hill City; three daughters, Barbara SCOTT, Dorothy SCOTT and Gail MARTIN, all of Arapahoe, Nebraska; two brothers, Ralph SCOTT of Plainville and Dr. Duane SCOTT of Belleville; two sisters, Donna CLARKE of LaSalle, Colorado and Sally REIDEL of Overland Park, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2000 at Spencer Chapel in Hill City. Officiating was Pastor Mehl Cruit, and burial was in the Hill City Cemetery, Hill City. Memorials were suggested to the Graham County Hospital, Hill City.

SEELY, Kathryn
The Hill City Times -- Hill City, October 18, 2000
Kathryn (LAW) SEELY departed this life on Saturday, October 7, 2000 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas. She was 75 years of age.
Kathryn was born October 222, 1942 in Graham County, Kansas. She was the youngest of seven children born to Clarence Bertram and Mary Ella DIXON lAW. Kathryn graduated form Hill City High School in the Class of 1942. She continued her education at Fort Hays State Teachers College in Hays, where she graduated in 1946. She taught English and Music for one year at the Girl' Industrial School in Beloit.

On January 1, 1947, Kathryn married Harold Ray SEELY of Ashervillle, Kansas. Three children, Clarence, Alvin, and Susan, were born to this union. Throughout her married life on the family farm, she enjoyed music and literature. Known for her remarkable singing voice, Kathryn frequently sang and played piano and organ at weddings, funerals, and church events. She continued to write poetry until her recent illness, and she was published in area newspapers.
She was a member of the Asherville Athene Club for a number of years. She was also a charter member of the T.P.M. club and was an active member for a number of years. In addition, Kathryn was a member of the Asherville Baptist Church.

Preceding Kathryn in passing were her parents; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth BRANDYBERRY, Majorie RAY, and Dorothy HEISEL; and two brothers, Dixon LAW and Marshall LAW.
Kathryn is survived by her husband, Harold, of the home; two sons, Clarence SEELY of Asherville and Alvin SEELY and his wife, Cindy, of Junction City; one daughter, Susan JOHNSON, and her husband Ron, of Nevada, Missouri; one brother, Alvin LAW of Pullman, Washington; three grandchildren, James and Jason SEELY of Junction City, Kansas, and Matthew JOHNSON of Kansas City, Missouri; and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 at McDonald Funeral Home, Beloit, Kansas, with Pastor Bill BRAZIL of the First United Methodist Church officiating. submitted by Jessie Thompson

Joel SHIVELY was born in Ohio, February 17, 1850, and died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Frank SUPER, September 26, 1916, aged 66 years, 7 months and nine days. He married Melissa WILSON in 1890. They had six children, four of whom survive.

SMIES, Henry
The Hill City Republican -- September 14, 1916
Henry SMIES, an old gentleman who wored in town as a baker, died here Saturday morning. A nephew came out from Clay Center and took charge of the body and shipped it elsewhere for burial. He followed his trade going from place to place but little was known of him here.

SPELLMAN, Philomena ARMSTRONG
Hill City New Era, Thursday, September 10, 1908
Philomena ARMSTRONG SPELLMAN was born near Cincinnati, Ohio, August 27, 1827, died September 8th, 1908 aged 81 years and 11 days. She and Mr. SPELLMAN, who died in 1893, were married in 1847 in Indiana and after a residence in Iowa they came to this county in 1880. Seven children were born, only two of whom, Charles A. SPELLMAN and Mrs. Minnie CRAIG, both residents of this county, survive. The deceased was for many years a member of the Congregational church but became a charter member of the Presbyterian church which was organized at the old town of Gettysburg and retained her membership in the church at this place. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church, Rev. KEELER conducting the service. Janet M. SPORING, age 55, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2000, at the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas. The daughter of Anna (FLAX) GEIST and the late Adam GEIST, she was born April 28, 1945, at Hays, Kansas.
Janet was a housekeeper for the Super 8 Motel in WaKeeney. She had been a resident of WaKeeney since moving there from Quinter, Kansas in 1975. She was a graduate of Hill City High School, and a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church and its Altar Society in WaKeeney. Janet and Dennis E. SPORING were married on October 20, 1978 at the First United Methodist Church in WaKeeney. He survives.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, Dennis SPORING, and her mother, Anna GEIST of WaKeeney, include two sons, Lawrence WERTH of Winona, Kansas and Lonnie WERTH of Harrison, Arkansas; a daughter, Reesa GERHARD of Hays, Kansas; two brothers, Donald GEIST and Norman GEIST, both of WaKeeney; three sisters, Delores KERBAUGH of Hill City, Kansas; Elaine WERTH of WaKeeney, Kansas; and Frieda WERTH of Wichita, Kansas; and six grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and an infant sister, Mary Ann GEIST.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2000, at Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney, Kansas. Officiating were Father Donald F. STULL, Wendell P. The Hill City Times -- Hill City, August 30, 2000
Wendell P. STULL, a resident of Chapman, Kansas, passed away at Geary Community Hospital in Junction City, Kansas, on Tuesday morning, August 29, 2000, at the age of 80.
Wendell was born November 26, 1919 at Palco, Kansas. His parents were Azel and Thelma (GLASGOW) STULL. He attended Palco Grade School and graduated from the Palco High School in 1939. He attended Ft. Hays State College and received a B.S. degree.

He was married to Dorothy V. PRICER on December 27, 1941, at the Methodist parsonage in Palco, KS. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942; he served 3 1/2 years in Africa and Italy; and he was discharged in 1945.
He returned to Ft. Hays State College, where he obtained his Master's Degree. He coached and taught at Holyrood, KS for 13 1/2 years. The family moved to Chapman in 1961, and he coached and taught at Chapman High School. He was the coach of the 1965 State Championship Basketball Team, and he was the Athletic Director until his retirement on June 30, 1985.

He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and traveling. He was a member of the Plainville Masonic Lodge, Holyrood Order of the Easter Star, life member of the N.E.A., Chapman American Legion Post No. 240, and the Chapman United Methodist Church in Chapman.

His wife, Dorothy, of their home, survives him; and a son, Ronald STULL of Topeka, KS; one sister, Wanda BRAUN of Russell, KS; and a step-sister, Janice SAGE of Grandbury, Texas; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rex, and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be held at the Chapman United Methodist Church in Chapman, Kansas on Friday, September 1, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Kenneth Trickle, Jr., will officiate. Burial will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Palco, KS, that afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
The Londeen Funeral Chapel will be open for visitation from Thursday morning until Friday morning. Memorials may be given to the Chapman United Methodist Church or the memorial of the donor's choice. THRUSH, Marvin R.

Memorial services for Marvin R. THRUSH were held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2000 at the Umapine Seventh Day Adventist Church in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Mr. THRUSH, 93, of Milton-Freewater, died Sunday, October 1, 2000, at Heritage House Adult Foster Care Center.

He was born February 14, 1907, at Hill City, Kansas, to Abraham and Sarah MAXON THRUSH. He lived on the homeplace in western Kansas until his marriage to Maggie KALLENBACH in 1928, when he moved to Portland, Oregon. In 1930 they settled at Hillsboro, Oregon, where he did some farming, odd jobs, and eventually became a contractor, building some 100 houses.
> His wife, Maggie, died in 1986. In 1997 he moved to Coquille, to live with his daughter, Marie, and her husband, Allen JOHNSON. In October, 1999, he moved to Heritage House in Milton-Freewater.

Survivors include his daughter, Marie JOHNSON of Milton-Freewater; grandson, Michael HURLEY of Portland; granddaughters, Patti SPILKER and Monica NORTON, both of Pendleton; Mardee BRENNAN and Penny GALAMBOS, both of Portland and six great-grandchildren. Other relatives surviving include Helen (Mrs. Don) PALMER of Salem, Oregon, who is a daughter of Marvin THRUSH's brother, Max THRUSH. Both of the men were half-brothers to the late Elmer THRUSH of Hill City. Mrs. PALMER is also the daughter of Alta (Dean) THRUSH MARSHALL, a sister of former Hill City resident Edna (Dean) HARRELL SNYDER, now of Hays. submitted by Jessie Thompson


TOWNS, Charles Dennis

Charles Dennis Towns, 85, a retired Westcon Products Quality Control Supervisor, died on Thursday, January 13, 2000. A Wichita resident, he was formerly from Palco. His funeral services were held on Monday, January 17, 2000, at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel.
Survivors include hs wife, Mary; a son, Paul of Wichita; two daughters, Sharon MYERS-PORTER, and husband, Lee, of Wichita, and Deborah KETCHERSIDE and husband, Harold, of Wichita; stepsons, J.D. IRWIN and wife, Sherry, of Wichita, and Terry IRWIN and wife, Rosamond, of Wichita; and a step-daughter, Denita MILLER, and husband Mark, of California, Missouri. Also surviving are two brothers, Ronald TOWNS of Mission, Texas, and Lawrence TOWNS of Wichita; three sisters, Mildred ABT of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Helen ADAMS and Jeannie OWINGS, both of Wichita; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

WELTY, Francis

Francis WELTY, father of Jos. WELTY, living 3 miles north-west of Hill City, died this morning at the residence of his son. Mr. WELTY was born in Germany in the year 1811, and has been a resident of this country fifty years. He located in Kentucky in an early day, and moved from there to this county in 1884.



YOUNG, Elsie YOUNG (Keziah Elsie CAMPBELL MCDANIEL)

Keziah Elsie CAMPBELL was born 26 Jun 1869 at Mills Co, IA. She departed this life at her home in Bogue on Sun, 21 Dec 1958, at the age of 89 years, five months and 25 days.
At the age of 6 years she moved to Norton County, KS, with her grandparents (Adam and Sarah RANKIN CAMPBELL) where she grew to womanhood in the Oronoque community. On 13 Jun 1889 she was married to Allen MCDANIEL at Council Bluffs, IA. They moved to Meridian, OK, and lived there 8 years, later coming to Graham County, KS, by covered wagon to a farm in the SpringCreek community. To this union 12 children were born, 7 boys and 5 girls.

On 27 Sep 1922 she was married to A. N. YOUNG of Bogue. Her life was filled with hardships overcome by courage and joys long to be remembered. She was a member of the Bogue Community Methodist Church. One of her joys of later years was the fellowship of the Alpha Sunday School Class.
She was preceded in death by 6 sons, Jim, Ray, Lloyd, Ira, Tommie and one at birth and two great-grandsons.

She leaves to mourn her passing five daughters and one son: Sadie V. LYTLE of San Diego, CA; Leo A. MCDANIEL of Bogue; Josie ELLIS of San Diego, CA; Mary MINOR of Hood River, OR; Ora GRAY of Bogue; and Nola MILES of Hill City. One step-son Minor YOUNG of Harrison, AR, two step-daughters, Libbie LAVELL of McDonald and Minnie KELLY of Manhattan; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; one half-sister, Mary HUBBELL of Glenwood, IA; a sister-in-law, Rebecca POTEET of Oklahoma City, OK; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wed., 24 Dec at 2 o'clock at the Bogue Community Church with Rev. Gerald Martin officiating. Interment was in the Bogue Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Lloyd Wallace, Victor Fabricus, Harold Irby, Henry Brault, Garold Napue and Melvin Kenyon. The singers were Rex Thompson, Oscar Brown, Anita Kenyon, and Leanore Clampett, with Virginia Kenyon, pianist accompanying.

Relatives who came from a distance to attend the funeral were: Sadie V. LYTLE and Josie ELLIS of San Diego, CA; Mary MINOR of Hood River, OR; Mr. and Mrs. Dale ROZEAN, Tribune; and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin MILES, Pratt.
