- Mr. and Mrs. Sam T Unruh and family from Moundridge were the guests Sunday
at the home of the former’s sister, Mrs. Jake T. Koehn and Mr. Koehn.
- Mrs. Lena Becker and family spent Sunday with Miss Elizabeth Unruh.
- Mr. and Mrs. John B. Becker and family visited at the BB Koehn home near
Burrton Sunday.
- Miss Selma Koehn spent Sunday with her home folks near Moundridge.
- Mr. and Mrs. JAR Schmidt and family, Mr. and Mrs. Menno Dirks and family,
and Mr. and Mrs. John Dirks and children were guests at the Henry Smith home
Sunday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Eben Becker and children, Mrs. HT Koehn and Miss Eva made a
drive to north of Moundridge Sunday to visit with relatives.
- Mr. and Mrs. Ben T Koehn and family were callers at the TB Koehn home
Sunday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Paul Koehn entertained a number of guests last Sunday by
giving a Sunday dinner to the following: Rev. and Mrs. AG Ensz, Rev. and Mrs.
John Ensz and baby, all of Inman, Mr. and Mrs. TB Koehn, Mr. and Mrs. John A.
Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. JJ Unruh and family, Susan and Ina Johnson, JP Unruh,
Marie and Susan Unruh. Afternoon callers were Mr. and Mrs. CD Unruh and
children and Mrs. Eva Becker, Elizabeth and Herman Becker.
- Mr. and Mrs. Alf Holdeman of Newton and Mr. and Mrs. Obed Johnson and
family were dinner guests at the Joe Holdeman place Sunday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Walter Seiler and baby made a drive to Greensburg over the
weekend to visit among relatives.
NEWTON NEWS
- Mrs. L.C. Doyle of 503 East Eighth street has re-entered the Halstead
hospital for treatment.
- Miss Rose Knittle resumed her work at the Cayot Mercantile company
Wednesday after a vacation of two weeks spent with relatives in Okmulgee and
Chickasha, Okla.
- Mrs. Clayton Lehman and Mrs. JW Graybill went to Emporia today to attend
some of the sessions of the Social Order of the Beauceant in national
convention there.
- Among the Halstead shoppers in Newton for treasure day were Mr. and Mrs.
Mike Huffman, Mr. & Mrs. Isaac palmer, Mrs. Sue Bookwalter, Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Bookwalter, Mrs. Ernest Huebert and Mrs. Jack Brown.
- Mr. and Mrs. George Sharp and daughter, Mrs. Jack Freeburne spent Sunday
in Manhattan visiting their daughter and sister, Bonita, who is a student at
the state college. They went on to Salina to take to her home Mrs. Sharp’s
sister, Miss Gertrude Sherman, who had visited here.
- Mrs. Emma Sands has returned from Greeley, Colo,, where she spent the
summer with her daughter, Mrs. JR Tatman.
- Mrs. Marvin Moss and son, Jack, have returned home from Orange, Va., where
they spent the summer with relatives. Mr. Moss motored to Orange for his wife
and son.
- Mrs. DF Tenny is spending a few days in Kansas City.
- Al Plummer has returned from Woodward, Okla., where he attended the rodeo.
- Radio fans heard an item of unusual interest broadcast from the Lincoln,
Neb., broadcast station which was clipped from the Kansan. The article
concerned the small child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Toevs who escaped death by a
narrow margin when she played with a black widow spider, putting it to her
lips several times and removing it when the insect’s legs scratched her in its
struggle to escape. The spider did not bite the child.
- Business callers in Newton Wednesday included Mr. and Mrs. EB Harper and
children of Sedgwick; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Groening of Canton; Mrs. JW McGinn of
Sedgwick; JJ Becker of Buhler, Mrs. CE Bell and daughter of Valley Center; Mr.
and Mrs. HJ Schroeder of Goessel; CA Rhoades of Valley Center and Charles Artz
and his sister, Miss Mable of Potwin.
- Mr. and Mrs. James Grant of August spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Newton
to be present at the first birthday celebration of their grandson, John Grant
Napier, son of Mr. and Mrs. JM Napier on Tuesday.

- Surprise Birthday Party. Emma Jean Sands was four years old Tuesday, Sept.
24, and her mother, Mrs. L. Dean Sands invited a group of her little friends
to their home from four to six o’clock to help her celebrate the event. Emma
Jean’s grandmother took her to Military park to play with the little ones
gathered and when all had arrived the two returned to find her little friends
in the livingroom. They sang “Happy Birthday” to Emma Jean, following which
Mrs. Sands, Mrs. O.R. Coburn and Edna Woolery led in games. A lovely birthday
cake with four lighted candles provided a pretty centerpiece for the table at
which ice cream and cake were served. Emma Jean opened her gifts which all
were permitted to admire. Guests were Caroline Lou Coburn, Zella Frances
Sands, Phyllis Marsh, Donnie Royston, Rita Harrison, Elva and Elma Lough,
Anita Lee Johnson, and Alberta Hanstine.

- Birthday Party. Tuesday, Sept. 24, was the first birthday of Grant, the
baby son of Mr. and Mrs. JM Napier, and he was host at a party of his baby
friends at his home at 801 Ash. The mammas and a few other friends were
permitted to enjoy the party, also, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James
Grant of Augusta, were out of town guests for the occasion. Grant was the
recipient of many cute, tiny gifts, many of which he will no doubt be able to
recall on future birthdays. His baby guests were: Judith Ann Wright, Beverly
Lander, Ann Stone, Robert Joseph Trousdale, Oliver John Geiger, and Patricia
Walsh.

- Birthday Party. Wednesday was the birthday anniversary of Clyde Abney and
his… (unreadable)… pleasant party for him at his home Wednesday evening. The
guests enjoyed bridge, Mrs. Willard Dillman and Clyde Abney winning the favors
for high scores following which delicious refreshments were served. Guests
were Mr. and Mrs. BurVise of Wichita, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Dillman of Hesston,
Polly Rickert, Linda Matthies, Beulah Boylan, Buss Duby and Clive Abney.
- Mrs. JW George, owner of Rockway Nursery, went to Salina today to be a
guest in company with nurserymen from all over Kansas…. Mrs. Roy Thomas
accompanied Mrs. George.
- Mrs. Henry Hoffman has returned from a 30-day vacation in California. She
also visited at Newkirk, Okla. for a week.
- Mr. and Mrs. Walter Molzen and son, Dayton, Robert and Don Gay, Gene
Smalley, and Frank Wilson will go to Kansas City, Kan., Sunday to participate
in the state archery tournament.
- James D. Nicholson, district manager of the Kansas Gas & Electric company,
drove to Buhler today to attend to company business.
- Mrs. Caroline Seaman and Charles Seaman called on Mr. and Mrs. RH Moore of
Walton, Sunday afternoon.
- Edna and Jacob Loucks spent Sunday afternoon with Daniel and Elaine Hauck.
- Misses Hazel and Myrtle Molzen spent Friday night with the Misses Helen
and Karleen King of Hutchinson.
- Mr. and Mrs. RR Claassen and children entertained at their home Saturday
evening in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Toevs and daughter, Miss Edna Ruth of
Aberdeen, Idaho. Those present besides the honor guests included Mrs. Herman
Claassen and children, Anna Rebecca and Eugene, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Claassen and
Miss Alma Winger whose home is also at Aberdeen. Miss Winger is attending
Bethel College this winter.
- Mrs. John Vogt and daughter, Dora, of Canton are visiting at the AH Hauck
home.
- Mr. and Mrs. John Breitenstem and family enjoyed seeing the show
“Steamboat Round the Bend” in Newton Monday evening.
SOUTH GARDEN NEWS
- Mr. and Mrs. Walter Seiler and daughter Virginia, and Bertha and Arnold
Wiggers spent several days visiting in Greensburg last week with relatives.
- Mr. and Mrs. Paul Becker and son were Newton visitors Wednesday.
- Rev. and Mrs. JA Dirks visited with Mr. and Mrs. CA Dettweiler Sunday
afternoon.
- Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wiggers and Mr. and Mrs. John Koehn visited relatives
in Newton Wednesday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Walters and son Dickie visited with Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Dillman Friday.
- Miss Ruby Nitengale spent Saturday in Newton.
- Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Wedel were Newton shoppers Saturday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Dan Dettweiler spent Sunday afternoon at the AC Dettweiler
home.
- Mr. and Mrs. Ike Friesen and daughter Letty spent Sunday afternoon with
Mr. and Mrs. Pete Dick.
VAN ARSDALE NEWS
- Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Steele and Nellie and Mr. and Mrs. george McCart and
Lawrence visited the fair at Hutchinson Wednesday.
- Bonnie Lou and Dallice Baumgartner spent Saturday afternoon with Dayton
and Clarence Molzen.
- Mr. and Mrs. George Chapple are the parents of a baby girl born at the
Bethel hospital.
- Mr. and Mrs. CF Molzen and Mrs. Clarence Baumgartner were Wichita visitors
Thursday.
- The Zion Evangelical Church observed rally day Sunday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Vogt and son were Sunday dinner guests at the John Ewy
home.
- Kenneth Grant spent last week at his home in Perry, Oklahoma.
- Mr. and Mrs. Claude Smith and daughter were Sunday dinner guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Glenn Steele.
- Dr. and Mrs. Glenn Collier of Halstead were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Arnold Ratzlaff Friday evening.
WALTON NEWS
- Mr. and Mrs. RL Taylor and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Glenn drove to Abilene
Thursday to visit Mr. and Mrs. Dean Glenn.
- IG Clark of Augusta was a Walton visitor Saturday.
- Mr. and Mrs. WC Wills attended the state fair in Hutchinson Thursday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kendall of Wichita were dinner guests Thursday of
Miss Marjorie McQuown.
- Bert Ferguson who is employed at the state penitentiary at Lansing is
spending a few days at his home here.
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith and daughter Roberta of Newton called at the Arthur
Parkhurst home Sunday.
- Mr. and Mrs. ML Davis attended the Koehn Essau wedding Sunday.
- Jimmy Patton is the proud owner of a new bicycle.
- The pageant, Joash’s Chest will be given at the ME Church next Sunday
evening. The ladies aid society of the ME Church will meet Thursday at the
parsonage.
- Harold McQuown is carrying his left arm in a sling as a result of football
injuries.
- John Guthrie shipped two carloads of cattle to Kansas City Tuesday from
Cassoday.
- Friday was Billie Guthrie’s birthday and the pupils of the third and
fourth grades and their teacher, Miss Miller enjoyed a treat furnished by Mrs.
Guthrie.
- Mrs. Robert Work, Mrs. Richard Patton, Mrs. Clinton Kaufman, and Mrs. RL
Taylor attended the meeting of the Women’s Missionary society of the district
in Newton Tuesday.
