Topic: Stewart--Burr Oak
From: Anita Von Ahsen kahsen@avalon.net
Date: Monday, June 26, 2000 07:09 PM

My Jewell County family lived at Burr Oak. Williams and Sarah Swarthout Stewart each pioneered with their parents to Michigan 1824-1826. They married theire in 1834. In 1857 they moved to Hardin, Clayton County, Iowa where they lived until 1870 when they moved to Jackson County MN for two years. In 1872 they moved to Burr Oak, KS. Sarah died and is buried there in 1885.

Children:

Laura, my gg-grandmother, born 1837. Stayed in Iowa and kept all the letters her parents and siblings wrote to her, as well as letters Sarah had kept from her father, Capt. A.R. Swarthout of Saginaw MI. Laura married Joseph Collins.

George Eugene, born 1839. May have never married. From letters, appears to have run a grocery store in Burr Oak for a while.

William Albert, born in 1841. Married Lizzie Brown in 1879. Letters show they moved around a lot, the last letter I have shows them in Idaho, preparing to move again. He was known as "Al". He may have come back to KS, as there is an Al Stewart buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery. Children: Willie, b. 1882; Lillian, b. 1886; Carrie, b. 1889; James, b. 1891; Maud, b. 1894; Mira, b. 1897.

Louise Larissa, born 1848. Married Levi Walt Whitney in 1867

Nelson S. born in 1853. Married Emma Girt in Smith Centre KS in 1880. History of KS, 1883 (Andreas): N.S. Stewart was a hardware merchant, clerked for J.K. McLain in the implement business for 5 years. in 1882 engaged in the hardware business under the name of Faidley Bros. & Stewart (I have letters on the letterhead). Nelson moved on to Rainier, OR and his father went to lived with them and died there in 1896. An online page Columbia County OR Genweb, referred to her death--1931, so apparently they remained in OR.

Clara Adele (Carrie), born in 1855. From the letters, Carrie was one of the "favorites". She married J.K. McClain in Jewell County in 1874. McKlain was a successful business man in Burr Oak. He was a Civil War Veteran. He was the first mayor of Burr Oak, ran an implement business, was Junior editor of Burr Oak Herald, and later established the Herald Publishing Company. Children: Willie, b. 1875 died in 1889; Kittie (Kate) b. 1882; Henry b. 1884. Carrie February 11, 1884, one week after Henry was born. J.K. may have moved on to Kansas City, MO. Carrie is buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery, apparently, after seeing the stone, with 3 of her babies that died. I hadn't known about these.

J.Gilbert, b. 1862. Married Sadie Ross in Jewell County, December 20, 1885. According to a clipping, Sadie's parents lived in Limestone township. J. Gilbert was called "Bert" in letters, and they apparently remained in Burr Oak. Their tomstone shows that Bert died in 1934, and Sadie died in 1940. They had children Ross, Vera, and Bernice. (I have pictures of them). They corresponded for a while with my gg-aunt, but the family must have lost touch. The lady who took pictures of the Burr Oak Stewart tombstones for me said that next to Bert and Sadie's stone is a stone for Frank Conner 1880-1941 and Bernice Conner 1891-1984, and I wonder if this isn't their daughter Bernice.

Like I said, I have many letters (1852-1900) which I am transcribing, from this family, and the Swarthouts, as well as pictures of Wm & Sarah, and all the children, and a few of their grandchildren. I am trying to locate other descendants, with no luck. If anyone knows of any descendants of these families, please contact me, if you would like to know more about your family. The Swarthout line has been traced back to Holland in the early 1600's, and I have been able to get the Stewart line back a couple of generations, to Seneca County NY, and before that perhaps to NJ.

Anita

Topic: John Ezra Myerly
From: Robin Bills precambrian51@yahoo.com
Date: Saturday, June 17, 2000 07:57 PM

My great-grandfather, John Ezra Myerly, was born in Kansas 3-29-1882 & died in San Diego, CA 7-20-1958. My research suggests that he was born in Jewell County, probably in the Burr Oaks area. His mother's maiden name was Fahrney. His family appears to have come to Kansas from Iowa or Illinois, perhaps originally from Maryland. Does Jewell County have birth records that go back that far? If so, how would I go about seeing if the courthouse has his birth certificate? Are there research fees, etc.? Any help is appreciated.

From: SIDNEY TEAFORD teaford@ibm.net

I am researching the 1880-1900 period for Augustus Jerome Wood of Highland Township, and Elijah O'Daniels, and Balser Diehl families, both of Harrison Township. Some other family relations in that area were the following: Kinsel, Allen, Finkle or Fickle, Hodson, Healton, Jennings, Walker, Clark, Sherman Robeson, Grundy, and Roberts.

Please let me know if you have, or know of anyone who has family history information about the above families. Thanks. Sid
