Topic: Whittington / Mankato Cemetery information search

I am trying to locate my great great grandfather's (Henry C. Whittington) grave. The only information I have on him is that he died on Oct. 27, 1886 in Mankato Kansas and was buried there. I read in a previous post that there are three cemeteries there. Is there any way to contact someone to help me identify in which one he is buried? Does anyone maintain records for those cemeteries and if so, who? Are there any other records available for Mankato or Jewell County that go that far back that I can access? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can some one tell me how early Jewell county began recording deaths? Looking for my Cleland family who supposedly died in this county. Also wondering if someone can tell me where the city of White Rock is in Jewell Co Kansas. Appreciate any info you can share. Sonny

I do not know when Jewell Co. began recording deaths, but maybe someone in the Register of Deeds office (785-378-4070) might be able to help you out. As far as White Rock goes, that is the area around Burr Oak KS, along the White Rock river. North-Northwest of Mankato. I do not recall as a child growing up in Mankato of a town actually being called White Rock. Today White Rock High School is in Burr Oak. It is the high school for Esbon and Burr Oak. If you need any further help, please send me an email desertspazz@yahoo.com

How and where can I access copies of newspapers that cover the Mankato, Jewell county area for the period of 1920-1955? Supposedly Elijah S. Atteberry, who lived in Colorado, died in Mankato about 1949 while visiting his daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Arthur Rich, who ran a boarding house. I have written to Kansas state office of Vital Statistics and they do not show a death certificate. I thought maybe a newspaper might have a notice of visit and/or death. Thanks, Sharon S_Foree@Prodigy.net

Go to http://www.kshs.org/library/news.htm and search by county and date. There are also instructions on this page for borrowing via interlibrary loan.

Good luck, Ardie

You may also contact the Jewell County Post @ (785) 378-3191. They have some old copies of the paper several years back. I am not sure how far back, maybe the early twenties or so. They can probably help you out.

During the 1940's (at least) relatives Arthur Rich and wife Gladys (Atteberry) Rich ran a boarding house in Mankato. Does anyone have access to a city directory that might list the boarding house owner/managers and address? I would like to find out more about it. Thanks, Sharon S_Foree@Prodigy.net

I was wondering if anyone knew of an Ellis Jones that was a Dentist in Jewell Co. He married Condradina (Dena) Frederickson, they had a daughter Pauline. I understand that Dena had a shop there too. This would have been in around 1900 to 1950.
Condradina was my Grandfather's sister. Thank you... Cathy Frederickson Enneking

The Jewell County cemeteries have all been indexed by the North Central Kansas Geneological Society of Cawker City, Kansas. There are five volumes and all are indexed in a separate index volume. Mankato is in Center Township. There are 3 cemeteries -East Lutheran, Mount Hope and St. Theresa covered in volume 4.
