The Stan Herd Murals

The north side of the museum is painted with two large murals by the acclaimed artist Stan Herd

This mural is roughly 40 ft. in length and 20 ft. high and depicts the Kingman County landscape with Kingman native Clyde Cessna making his maiden flight in his first airplane. Clyde was born and raised on a farm in the southern part of Kingma County between the towns of Rago and Norwich. After he built his first plane, he went on to found the Cessna Aircraft Company which bears his name today and is one of the prominent airplane manufacturers in Wichita, Kansas.

This mural is roughly 15 ft. wide and 10 ft. high and depicts William "Cannonball" Greene driving his famous stage between Kingman and Pratt. In the early days of settlement before there were major roads, William Greene founded a stage line from Kingman on to Pratt and Greensburg and points west. The stageline eventually had 70 stages with 1000 employees and operated for approximately 4 years before the railroads finally opened lines west from Wichita. Greene was an expert horseman and was known to drive his stages at full speed but delivered his pasengers safely and on time. Greene founded the town of Greensburg, KS and was the first state represenative from Kiowa county. Even today, oldtimers still refer to the highway west of Kingman as the "Cannonball".
