In 1872, Ezra Hubbard killed John Haley, and an angry mob killed Hubbard. This is one rather florid account of the events.

MURDER OF JOHN LYDEN
In 1941 the report of the coroner's inquest in to the 1875 murder of John Lyden resurfaced at the courthouse, and the Lincoln County News laid out the case. No one was ever convicted or punished for this cold-blooded killing.

After the above article was printed, a News reader brought in an account of the murder from the Western Democrat, which was supposedly published in Lincoln County in 1875. No microfilm exists of this newspaper, so the information in this addendum is valuable.

In 1894, a Barnard-area farmer named John Simpson was murdered after surprising two burglars in his home.

THE MURDER OF W.S. STANLEY
In 1896, former Lincoln resident W.N. Renfro was arrested for the murder of another former Lincoln man, W.S. Stanley, in a Colorado mining town.

In 1897, a farmhand was found dead in the road north of Lincoln. After first believed to be suicide, the post mortem indicated murder. This crime was apparently never solved.

In 1898, Michael Haley was charged with stabbing to death his nephew in a brawl that seems to have started while one or both were intoxicated.

WELLS SHOOTS FREY IN SYLVAN
In 1904, Sam Wells shot John Frey in Sylvan Grove.

In 1910, a man named Paul Dooley was convicted of attempted blackmail.

BEVERLY GIRL IS TARRED AND FEATHERED
In 1912, Mary Chamberlain of Beverly was set up by a group of men and tarred and feathered, with no apparent reason for the attack, which drew national attention. This article includes links to coverage in the New York Times.

TONT MORRISON SHOOTS NAYLOR FAMILY
In 1915, Tont Morrison shot two members of the Naylor family, allegedly in a jealous rage. Both survived.

FITZHUGH THOMPSON SHOOTS JESSE COX AT ASH GROVE
In 1926, pranks led to a shooting at Ash Grove.

STELLA HYMAN MURDERS TWO
In 1920, Stella Hyman murdered her sister Lizzie Bunch and Lizzie's husband Ed, and tried to kill their daughter Nancy Bunch, because she wanted to marry her nephew Lee Bunch.
