EMMONS,James -m. in Lincoln, Lincoln CO., KS on Apr 4, 1880 - spouse =BOLES, Emiline Looking for any ancestrial information on either surname. Solve this mystery: In Dec of 1880, just before Christmas James disappeared from all record. He returned from town with a wagon ful of supplies and in the middle of the night he took the new wagon full of supplies and left. Supposedly, James' parents hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to search for him, to no avail.

I am researching Benjamin M. SMITH who married Katherine Frances MENEFEE in Lincoln Co., KS 14 August 1881. Benjamin is listed on US Census for Saline Co. in 1870. He and Katherine lived in Saline Co. (and perhaps at some point Ottawa Co.) until 1900 when they moved to Polk Co., MO just after the 1900 US Census was taken. Their children: George William SMITH b. KS Margaret Janette SMITH b. KS Katherine Mertha SMITH b. KS Ernest Elijah SMITHb. KS Eli Lewis SMITH b. KS Benjamin Bernell SMITH (died in infancy) b. KS Polly Place SMITH b. KS Laura Gertrude SMITH b. KS Clara Nelzina SMITH b. MO It is believed that George got into some trouble (with the law?) at approximately age 17. The family farm was sold (to get George out of trouble?) and the family moved to Missouri. Is there an index to court records--approximately 1900? Obituary for Benjamin (child) who died in Kansas, approximately 1893-94?

I am searching for the following ancestors in Lincoln, and Shawnee Counties, Kansas; EMMONS, MCCOWN, BOLES, YEAGER, MCGREAVEY.James M. EMMONS in the June 11, 1880 census for Lincoln Kansas lists James EMMONS born in Indiana. James married Marth Emiline BOLES in Lincoln County on April 4, 1880. My grandfather was Robert Harvey EMMONS, born in Lincoln, Lincoln County, Kansas March 12, 1881, and he was the only child. Martha Emiline's parents were Robert Howard BOLES and Mary MCCOWN, YEAGER (buried under the name MCGREAVEY?) Mary married Robert about 1851 probably in Kentucy. Their children are John Alexander BOLES September 11, 1852 in Iowa, James Harvey BOLES July 1853, born in Iowa, Andrew Jaxon BOLES Octorber 14,1857 in Iowa, Robert Jeremiah BOLES,May 251859 in Iwoa, William Howard BOLES, October 27, 1860 in Topeka, Kansas, and Martha Emiline BOLES November 14, 4862 in Shawnee, Kansas. Robert Howard BOLES was killed allegedly in Ohio during the Civil War. Another account states he died in Lawrence, Kansas in 1863. The man who came to tell Mary MCCOWN that her husband was dead was Jeremiah YEAGER. Family tradition says Mary MCCOWNwas born in Tyrone Ireland, but the 1880 Lincoln Kansas census says she was born in Indiana.) Mary MCCOWN BOLESmarried Jeremiah YEAGER on January 07, 1869 in Lincoln, Kansas. There were five YEAGER children. On April 4, 1880 Martha Emiline BOLES married James M. EMMONS in Lincoln, Lincoln County, Kansas. They took homestead land, and the June 11, 1880 Federal census for Kansas states that James was 25 and Martha 17, that she came from Kansas and he came from Indiana. Near Christmas time in 1880, James EMMONS disappeared. Their son, Robert Harvey EMMONS was born on March 12, 1881. In May of 1881, Martha sold the homestead to her half brother, George YEAGER. Martha's brothers, John Alexander and William Howard BOLES, and their families moved to Evergreen, and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. They never came back. John Alexander's only son Benjamin BOLES stated in 1957, "They left Kansas as there had been some trouble in there, though he never said what." In April 1882 Martha married James Anderson KURTZ(KURTS)in Lincoln, Kansas. No divorce or death records were ever found by the KURTZ researchers. My Grandfather was Robert Harvey EMMONS, and we have wondered always where his father James EMMONS went. Did he abandon his wife and son before Robert Harvey was born, was he a victem of foul play, and if so who did it? The year 2000 marks a hundred year anniversary of Robert Harvey EMMONSmmons migration to Bowie, Delta County, Colorado. He died in Paonia, Colorado, Delta County in 1951. He married Estella Ella HARDING of Furnas County, Nebraska on January 23, 1904 in Delta County, Colorado. "Harve and Stella" EMMONS had fifteen children, a set of twin boys the 9th and 10th children. This is a very large family, and we would like to know who this James EMMONS was and what happened to him. My snail mail is: Helen Baldwin P.O. Box 1546 Paonia, Colorado 81428 I would be most appreciative of any assistance in solving this old mystery that plagues our family. Thank you for your attention.

Bill Sowers (email: sixsunflowers@yahoo.com) - Thu Nov 3 1997
I'm trying to find out who the biological father of my grandfather was. His name was Claude SOWERS, however the surname was added when his mother, Mary DEEDS, married William Spangler SOWERS, in 1897. Claude was born Feb 18, 1894, in Lincoln, KS. His father's surname may have been either THOMPSON or STEVENSON... differing family stories give either name as a possiblity. He spent the first three years of his life with his aunt and uncle HEMINGER. Any help greatly appreciated.

Vernon F. Turner (email: VFTurner2@aol.com) - Tues Nov 18 1997
My Grandfather, Alonzo G. TURNER, had to quit school when he was eleven (1896) because his father, Asher H. TURNER, deserted his family. At some point in time after that he attended some sort of Penmanship school. He even had to caligraphy his own diploma. Are there records of this school? What was it's history? How much did it cost to go there? Does anyone know the history of this school? Where was it located? My Grandfather's mother, was Martha BROOKS TURNER, daughter of Henry Russell BROOKS. H.R. BROOKS had both a regular homestead, but he also had a Timber Claim, which he "proved up" in 1898. Both parcels were in Marion Twp. My Great-grandmother, Martha, had two sister, who married locally. One, Mary Brooks LUFF, ran a rooming house for many years, but I don't know where, and the other, Hattie Esther Brooks VAN VALKENBERG, still has descendents living in Lincoln Center. Vernon F. Linda Knabke (email: jamesk@lightspeed.net) - 4 Aug 1998
I believe that Caroline DYE died in 1907 as her heirs sold the land they inherited from her to her husband Moffett DYE for $5.00. The deed was recorded in April 1907 and I assume that the transaction took place shortly after her death. Caroline lived in Russell County, very near to the border of Lincoln County. Russell County has no record of her death so perhaps the attending physician was from Lincoln. I recently received a copy of her .obituary and know that she died Mar. 13,1907. More puzzling to me is that Russell County had no probate record for the farm that her heirs sold to Moffitt DYE. I have deeds for the transaction when she died, but nothing from when he died July, 18 1912. Where would the probate record be from his death?? Is it possible it was recorded in Lincoln? Suggestions for finding the probate record for Moffitt DYE??

I am seeking information about my Step grandfather, Arthur ARTMAN, who was probate judge of Lincoln County for many, many years. I know he was born Dec. 13, 1870, near Hunter, Greene County, NY; father was Justus Arminus ARTMAN (born 1849 in NY); mother was Aspasia McCOON (born 1852 in NY). At some point they moved to Kansas. I found them in the 1900 census living in Pleasant Township and two daughters Harriett (b. 1876 in KS) and Nellie (b. April 1888 in KS). Arthur was not listed with them and I could not find him in Elkhorn Township (Lincoln Center). I think Harriett married a RYAN and lived south of Lincoln. Perhaps someone can get me in touch with some of her family and they could provide me with further information about the ARTMAN family. I was raised in Beverly and remember well Granddad ARTMAN.

rrratch@msn.com Robert Ray Ratch (Ratzsch) (email: rrratch@msn.com) - 23 April 1999
The purpose of this inquiry is to try and find information about my grandfather, Carl RATZSCH, (although I am unsure of his first name because I have seen various references to him as Karl, Carl and Charles) who came to the United States on October 8, 1880 and settled in Franklin Township, Lincoln County on March 3, 1881. He and his wife, the former Margaret KOHLER, reared eight children. They settled south of Lincoln on 160 acres and lived there until March 20, 1910, when they moved into the town of Lincoln. My grandmother, Margaret, died on April 26, 1929 and grandfather died on November 17, 1937. They are buried in the Lincoln Cemetery, Block 4, Lot 10.

It is my understanding that my grandfather became a rather substantial citizen of Lincoln and built many of the business buildings in Lincoln. However, when I visited there during the fall of 1997, I could not find anyone who could tell me where the RATZSCH family lived in Lincoln, what buildings he had built and why it was that he came upon hard times that caused him to be living on the "poor farm" when he died.

I do know that after homesteading in Lincoln County, he acquired hundreds of acres of farm land in and around Lincoln and in fact I trekked some of the acreage where he homesteaded. I was thrilled to learn of this website, but was shocked to learn that there was absolutely no information to be gleaned about my family. Besides my grandfather and grandmother, the family members included, my great grandmother, Sophia KOHLER, my uncles Hans F., Charles O., Willie Raenhart, Walter J., Henry Edward and my father, Ray Emerson and my aunts Lena M. (married Charles SPARKS who became town Marshall in Ellsworth) May Pearl (married Earl Dodge and they farmed in Lincoln County until the 1950s). Although I am rather biased, I don't think any history of Lincoln could be complete without some reference to my family.

Be that as it may, I am deeply interested in learning anything I can about my family and would be forever greatful to anyone who could help me.

Sincerely,
Robert Ray Ratch (Ratzsch), 1914 Forest Creek Lane, Libertyville, IL 60048 - E-Mail: rrratch@msn.com

Researching RATHBUN & WATSON families of Lincoln Co. KS.
William Henry Harrison RATHBUN & Sarah Isabell Helena HOBBS were both born in MO, married in KS (possibly Lincoln Co., but more likely Cheyenne Co as that is where most of their children were born), and died in Lincoln Co. (23 July 1948 for William, 18 Dec. 1953 for Sarah).
Their son James Leonard married Edit Bell WATSON in Lincoln Co. on 23 Dec 1908. Edith was the daughter of Henry WATSON & Elizabeth MATCHETTE. Edith's mother died before 1900, Henry raised Edith & her older brother Chester alone, as far as I know.

I am trying to find out information on my true grandfather. He was Emerson McREYNOLDS. When he married Pearl Elizabeth TURNER she was 14 years of age and he was 21. She was born 2 Sep 1907. I know he was born in Colorado and spent most of his life in prison, however, he did not die in prison. This is the extent of what is known about him. Can you help or direct me elsewhere?
Further they moved to Oklahoma and she remarried to Lester Hillman 10-16-26 but she was back in Kansas at that time, so I don't know if their divorce was in Oklahoma or in Kansas.

Most everything concerning the Turner family though was in Lincoln county.

RUPIN" (either Adam or Anton--father and son both were doctors) is listed in Lincoln County Kansas Medical Personnel, "Register of Physicians & Accoucheurs" section, Annual report of the State Board of Health of the State of Kansas, 1887. Listed as living at Sylvan Grove, Lincoln County, KS. Is there a historical society for Lincoln County or anyone who can do lookups and provide photocopies?

I am an independent researcher working on Anna CHURCHILL WAIT...just wondered if anyone knows what happened to her daughter in law, Lillian. The son Alfred is buried in Lincoln cemetary with the parents, Walter and Anna and I haven't found Lillian...just curious as to what might have happened to some of Anna's personal items.
I would appreciate any information about WAITs of Lincoln County.

SMITH, QUINN and PAGAN
I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Chalmer SMITH. He was one of the scouts with General Forsyth at the battle of Beechers Island. I have read some histories of this battle and assume that Chalmer SMITH was a very young man at the time; so I guess he was born about 1845 to 1850. He died in Beverly, Kansas on March 31, 1919. He married Katherin QUINN and they had a Daughter Josephine Mary SMITH (Josie) who was born July 4, 1887. I have heard that Katherin QUINN SMITH died during childbirth or very shortly after. I would like to know if these facts are true; if they had any other children; and if so, where are the decendants. Josie married John Joseph PAGAN and they lived in Beverly during part of their marriage. They had a son and a daughter, Leone (my mother) born in Beverly on November 18, 1912. About all I know about this side of my family is that Leone had a cousin named Doris PAGAN and they loved to visit with Grandpa Chalmer SMITH and his freind Jack PEATE. My mother learned about the battle from them, but she was only seven years old when Grandpa SMITH died. I don't know much about the PAGAN family and nothing about the SMITH family. If anyone can give me some more information, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your attention. I'm looking for any information with regards to my grandfather: John K. OEHLER. Born at Sylvan Grove in 1897. Also looking for any history that would help me locate the land that my G-Grandfather Jacob OEHLER farmed for 10 years near Sylvan Grove. They farmed that land from 1892 until 1903. They then moved on to Oregon, then finally Canada. My grandfather often talked about the river that flowed thru that land. All my grand-father used to talk about, was his childhood in Kansas. I would love to visit Lincoln County some day, and hope to even find the land he so fondly talked about.
Thanks
