The twenty third session of the Marion County Normal Institute opened in the High school building, in Peabody, on June 3, 1901. One hundred and twenty members were enrolled at the opening, and in a very short time the classes were fully organized and everything going like clock work. Conductor Bushey certainly know how to organize an institute so as to get a maximum of work in a minimum of time. The Normal is divided into three divisions according to the grade of certificate the members expect to apply for. The divisions are numbered separately, and the members of each division are expected to march and be seated in that order. And if any one is absent from a class at any time he knows that his desk will be left vacant and not and recor of same will be made by the instructors. Besides the record of punctuality the instructors keep records of deportment and scholarship, and the member make perfect records will receive special mention in the county superintendent's report at the close of the Normal to patrons and the county newspapers. The whole plan of work and organization is such as inspires the teachers to faithful attendance and application. The sessions are held only in the forenoons, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and closing at 12:30 p.m. The faculty consists of A. H. Bushey, conductor: W. B. Hall and U. G. Mitchell, instructors, W. C. Kline, musical director. As Superintendent Knowies well said in his announcements, the strength and popularity of these gentlemen as Institute workers, assure the teachers of the county one of the best Institutes in the state A strong course of four lectures, free to members of the institute, has been provided by the citizens of Peabody at an expense of $250. The first lecture was given June 4th by Rev. D. M. Fisk, of Topeka, on the subject, "Education of the Enrichment of the Common Life," and was one of rare, helpful and entertaining power. The other lecturers announced to follow are, Col. Geo. W. Bain, Rev. McClary and Dr. A. S. Draper, all of the men of nation reputation. The people of Peabody have greeted the visiting teachers with sincere cordiality. They have welcomed them freely to the hospitality of their homes, and placed at their disposal their fine public library, opera house and high school building. And in turn we know that the members of the institute entertain a warm feeling for Peabody and her people. The NEWS heartily wishes continued success to the fine system of schools of Marion county and its splendid corps of teachers. INSTITUTE ENROLLMENT. Peabody C.E.
