All books must start somewhere, and this one starts in East Germany, 1/2 mile from Poland, in a little town called Silesea, 35 miles northeast of Breslave.
It starts with a man called Ernest F. Zimmerling, who was a farmer who loved to hunt. He met a lady who was a painter. They fell in love, got married, and eventually moved to America and on to Kansas. They had seven children while in Germany, and two later in Kansas. Not much is known about Ernest F. and Karoline (Paul) Zimmerling, but what is known about their children will keep you reading for a while.
Ernest and Karoline Zimmerling They were from Silisea, East Germany; capital, Breslave. They lived 35 miles northeast of the capital. All of our ancestors were hunters and farmers.
Ernest Zimmerling came from a farm of 60 acres, one of the largest farms in the neighborhood, 1/2 mile from Poland, yet there were no Polish people in the family, and the Germans didn't speak Polish.
Karoline was from another village. She was a painter, and some of the family still have some of her work. She married Christian Webber. He had a hotel and a farm. To this union one son was born -- Robert. Christian died, Karoline and her child ran the hotel. She later married Ernest Zimmerling, who was a farmer (but a hunter at heart).
He decided that the time was right to go to America, a new country with new opportunities.
After a few months in America, he returned to
Germany where he sold his farm and brought his
family to the new country. Karolines son by her
first marriage remained in Germany with his
grandparents. Later he visited his mother in
Kansas, but returned to Germany. Ernest also had
two children by his first wife.
