"An Old Settler Gone.

Last Friday, the 28th day of May, this community was called upon to mourn the death of one of its most honored and respected citizens, Harmon Vedder Beeson. His death has been expected for some time, yet the announcement cast a gloom over our little city. His remains were laid in their last resting place Saturday morning.

He was born in Schenectady, N. Y., Jan. 15, 1809; was the son of Wm. Beeson of Uniontown, Pa., who was a soldier in the United States during and before the was of 1812. His mother was a daughter of Gen. Vedder of the Hudson. In 1831 he married Rachel Rupp, who survives him at the age of 75 years. Besides his wife he leaves the following children: Mrs. Kate Sparks of Rantoul, Mrs. C. Freeman of Texas, Mrs. Thompson of Twin Mounds, Douglas-co., Harmon Beeson of the Indian Territory and Mrs. G. A. Colton, J. S. Beeson and J. D. Beeson of this city. He sent three boys to the war, one of whom - Richard - was buried at Vicksburg.

He came to Kansas in 1857, locating in Stanton-twp. In 1863, his oldest three boys going into the army, he concluded to leave the farm and come to Paola, where he entered into the mercantile business, which he successfully followed many years. In 1864 he entered the State Militia and was elected first lieutenant in what was known as Miller's company, which did good service during Price's raid. He was an exemplary citizen, honest in the broadest sense of the word, a kind husband and father and, although his many friends know that his life's work was finished in this world, they mourn his loss."
