Query: I found a reference to Symonds in the death LDS film index on the Miami lookup death record web page it states Symonds 170. I am looking for the following family found in Fontana, Miami, KS. James Art Symonds b 1868 Il married an Emma Jane Polhamus (Emma is buried by herself in Cadmus Cem in Linn County). They had a son Harry Symonds b. Sep 1888 KS enumerated with James Art Symonds parents (Marenus or Marion and Clara Symonds in 1900 Fontana). No record of James Art Symonds in 1900 so he may be buried in Miami County KS possibly before 1900.

Query: In going through the Miami County KS, Cemetery Index, Vol 3, p 417, I find a listing for Lulietlie Elwood. I have a gg Aunt who died in Miami County on April 4, 1869, at age twenty-two. Her name was Juliet Whitaker Elwood. Her birthdate was Jan 11,1847. We have these dates from the bible of her father Joseph Seagrves Whitaker. We were wondering if this could possibly be her as we can find no other listing anywhere close to this name. Her husband was, George Elwood.

Response: From Family Histories and Stories of Miami Co, KS, Vol 1, p 30, Osawatomie History, from the files of the Osawatomie Historical Society: On August 30th, 1856 "The 400 Pro-slavery men under General Reid knew that Brown and his 40 poorly equiped men could not meet them in the open, and so Brown and his men fought from the cover of the trees and the underbrush in what is know the John Brown Park. Captain Brown routed the left wing of General Reid's army, killing and wounding between 70 and 80 men, but as the Pro-slavery men rallied, he ordered a retreat across the Marais des Cygnes River. five of Captain Borwn's men were killed. Four of these are buried at the corner of Ninth and Main Streets. They are: Frederick Brown, David Garrison, T. P. Powers, and George Partridge. The body of Charles Kaiser was not found. A monument was erected to their memory on August 30, 1877."

Query: Jonathan Holmes, a retired school teacher and his 2nd wife Catherine "Kate" Zerr Neville Winkler Holmes lived in Miami Co., KS near Twin Springs from about 1900 until 1907. According to Kate's journal they were living near some of Jonathan's children and their families. Kate died 2-18-1907 and was buried in the Fontana Cemetery. I have a photograph of Jonathan and Kate. I'd very much like to locate descendants of Jonathan Holmes by his first wife to exchange genealogy information. The following are probably related to Jonathan: Caroline M. Query: I am looking forinformation about my grandmother Margaret (Maggie) M. Martin. Family surname Meagher or Meager. She was committed to Osawatomie State Hospital around 1904. Her husband was Walter l. Martin. Her fourth child, Martha Martin was my mother. She went to the hospital after Martha's birth in Feb 1904.

Vol 1, p 200, story of Herbert and Sarah Lewis Hill. His parents were Robert Bruce Hill and Mary Elizabeth Woolsey. Their daughter (Herbert's sister) Sarah (Sally) Hill married George Livingston. p 201 includes a photo of the Hill family including Sarah Hill.

Vol 1, p 351, story of Marvin and Georgia Spurlock. Georgia Livingston (b 30 Aug 1914 Louisburg, KS, m 15 Jul 1937 to Marvin Spurlock - b 14 Feb 1914 Bates Co, MO, son of James M. Spurlock and Francis Caldwell Spurlock) was the daughter of Peter Livingston and Cecil Larimer Livingston. Her grandparents were George W. Livingston and Sarah Hill Livingston, and Joseph Albert Larimer and Mary Lee Larimer. Her great grandparents included Peter Livingston Sr and Dorcas Converse Livingston, and Felix and Mary Larimer. Georgia and Marvin had 3 children: Mary Ann Beckwith; Judith E. Buckner; Virginia Loudermilk.

They had 3 children: Charles Franklin Heritage (b 22 Jul 1924, m Katheleen Hurlbut 14 May 1955); Elmer Marion Heritage (b 16 Jul 1926, m Flossie Price); Emma Della Heritage (b 9 Apr 1928, m Arnold Reicheneker).
