Namely, Frank, Edward, Fred and Lewis BROCKELMAN and any of their offspring, they came from Lincoln, Kansas. STITES...ELTON...LAIRD Jim Laird (jlaird@bellsouth.net) 23 December 1999 Seeking information about Melissa STITES, married Isaac S. LAIRD. Melissa was born 6 April 1842 in Jefferson County, Indiana; died 2 May 1916 in Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas. Married, 28 October 1860 in Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas, to Isaac S. LAIRD. Melissa's father was Alfred(Alford) STITES and her mother's name was Elizabeth ELTON. First, I would like to verify this information and then I would like to know more about Melissa's parents and family. Melissa is my Great-Grandmother. KAW MISSION Karren Amaro (skyghost@oz.sunflower.org) 28 November 1999 I've gotten some more specific information on my Kaw orphan. On page 197 of William E. Unrau's book, THE KANSA INDIANS, it says that the Quakers opened a Manual Labor School for the KAW children in May of 1863. There were 32 boys and 3 girls in attendance when it opened. The Missionaries were Thomas H. and Mary STANLEY. The school closed in 1866-1867. Since the children at the Methodist mission were orphans, I'm wondering if these children were too. If that is the case, my Great-Great-Grandmother could be one of the 3 little girls. I need to find a record of the names of the children at that school (both KAW names and any names given them by the Quakers). Thanks a bunch! VAN VLEET...NORTHRUP LAVNelson@aol.com 7 November 1999 I am looking for information about my Great-Great Grandfather, John Osro VAN VLEET, who we believe died in approximately 1878 and is buried in Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas. He was married to Eliza Ann NORTHRUP. We believe that he was a match maker and died from sulfur blood poisoning from a cut. Was there a match factory in Kansas in the 1870's? MAXEY Barbara Hill (behill@swbell.net) 6 November 1999 We have researched a branch of the family who were from Council Grove, Kansas. Their last name is MAXEY, and they lived in the area in the 1800's. One of the more prominent MAXEYs being a Methodist circuit rider. We are stumped when we tried to find out what happened to the last known MAXEY from the area. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. QUAKERS...HOAG Karren Amaro (skyghost@oz.sunflower.org) 7 October 1999 I am looking for information about the Quakers who worked with the Kaw (Kansa) Indians near Council Grove in Morris County. I'm looking for info from about 1860-1870 after the Methodist missionaries pulled out. It's possible my Great-Great-Great-Grandmother was an orphan from the Kaw tribe. I need to know if the Quakers gave the Indian orphans Quaker names and if they kept records of the children they placed. I know the Quakers working there at the time did not get government funding, but I don't know if they had to report placement of Indian orphans to the government. I'm especially interested in knowing if any Quakers named HOAG lived in Morris County and worked with the Kaw tribe or traded with them. There seems to be a link to that family. Enoch HOAG became Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Kansas tribes about 1869, having been appointed by President Grant. MORRIS Harriette Jensen (hariji@mediaone.net) 6 October 1999 I am looking for any information on the Joel MORRIS who is listed as being on the Claytonville Township, Breckenridge Co., Kansas census in 1860. I believe he may be my great-Grandfather, who disappeared shortly after the birth of my Grandfather, Jesse Franklin MORRIS, b: 8 October 1880, Butler Co., Kansas. I'm not sure which part of Breckenridge County, Claytonville Twp was in. Breckenridge County annexed parts of Chase and Madison counties and was later renamed Lyon County. If anyone knows the location of Claytonville Twp, I would appreciate that information as well. (NOTE: Courtesy of the Flint Hills Genealogy Society -- Most of Breckenridge County is now part of Lyon. In 1855 the county was established as a 24 mile square with the southern boundary where present day Logan Ave. in Emporia is. In 1859 they added 3 more miles to the southern boundary (which was Madison County). In 1860 the took in another 12 miles to the south out of Madison County. Madison county was then added to Greenwood county, and was no more. This is the current southern boundary of Lyon and Greenwood Co. In 1862 the name changed from Breckinridge to Lyon. In 1863 a 2 mile strip to the west was transferred to Chase County, and in 1864 the north end of the 2 mile strip was attached to Morris County.) HUDSON...STOOPS Linda Hudson (jo7175@aol.com) 11 July 1999 I am trying to find information on my husbands family who lived mostly in Council Grove. I have been given to understand that most of his family is buried in Wilsey Cemetery (south portion). His Great-Great-Grandfather is buried there and was in the 99th Illinois Infantry, Co., C, from 1861-1865. Also there was a Nancy (STOOPS) HUDSON, that in the early 1800s, from an article my brother-in-law has (the newspaper article) states that she was one of the first settlers in Council Grove.
