It is near the town of Earlton, and as of 1968 the farm was still there as my mother visited it. Her father's name was Albert PEMBERTON and her mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Maria CARPENTER. Their first child was born at the homestead which my aunt said was called 'Pleasant Valley' in 1897 and her name was Goldie Marie PEMBERTON. My aunt, Lyla Pauline was their second child born in 1900 in Chanute, told me that 'Pleasant Valley' is 2 miles west of Earlton on old Route 2 and 1 1/2 miles north. My grandparent's third and fifth children were born at the homestead, while their fourth was born in Bartlesville, OK when it was still Indian territory. Both grandparents were ill with TB and left Kansas in 1912 or 1913 to come to CA to the Imperial Valley where it is hot and dry, hoping to get cured. They didn't, and both passed in 1913. I don't know who owned or worked the homestead in the years between 1913 and 1968, but I do know who owned it in 1968. However I do not know who took it over once they passed. If anyone can give me any help I will surely be appreciative _______________________________________________________ BROWN...GARRISON Beverly Partee (penny40@urs2.net) 10 June 1998 My Grandmother Martha Jane BROWN, b: 6 March 1877, Neosho Co., KS. CANVILLE was a Frenchman who set up a trading post in Neosho Co., KS in 1844. I believe I am descended from O. S. CANFIL, of Haddam, Washington Co., KS who was in Haddam during the Civil War. Aside from general information (such as that the English and Irish names, Canfield, Canfill and Canfil, and the French names Caenville and Canville are all variations of the same Norman family name, de Caenville), I have not been able to trace my ancestors back past the Haddam CANFIL's, and even those I've documented poorly thus far. In the hope that perhaps Neosho County's A. B. CANVILLE was either an ancestor or closely related to one, I am posting this query. It seems that A. B. CANVILLE was old enough at the time of the 1865 census to possibly have already had a previous family back in the time he ran an Indian trading post. If A. B. CANVILLE was continuously in Kansas from when he opened his trading post in 1844, it seems reasonable that at least some of the children (at least those born in Missouri) likely were adopted by him whenever he married his wife Mary. I would also suppose from the ages and places of birth of the children that Mary and her children that were born in Missouri migrated to Neosho Co., Kansas around 1856 to 1858. On 1 May 1857, for instance Mary would have been 30 years old, and A. B. CANVILLE would have been 56. I suppose that Mary was a Great Osage, as there were many of the Osage nation in Neosho Co., at that time who had migrated from Missouri. Did A. B. CANVILLE move to Oklahoma when the Osage were forced to go there? Where in Oklahoma were the Great Osage of Neosho Co., relocated to? Why did Mary and her brood come to Neosho Co., from Missouri so much later than did the other Great Osage (assuming she was of that nation)? Even if A. B. CANVILLE turns out not to be a close ancestor, I am interested in finding out more about this fellow and his family. If anyone really cares about all this, and has local historical information, or information about A. B. CANVILLE, Mary, their ancestors, or any of their descendants (separately or together), I would appreciate to hear about it via e-mail. Thank You for taking the time to read this overly long query! ____________________________________________________ SCOTT...CRONK Michael Scott-Mikesalibi (Mikesalibi@aol.com) 9 Mar 98 Looking for any information or leads on a difficult surname. Their children were; Lillie May SCOTT born 4 February 1872, Annette SCOTT born 13 September 1873, Edward SCOTT born 3 September 1875, Rosa B. SCOTT born 29 January 1877, Joseph Winfield SCOTT born 30 December 1878, James Harley SCOTT born 14 October 1880, Ada SCOTT born 14 February 1882, and my great-grandfather Fred Herman SCOTT born 6 May 1885 in Rooks County. Thank You!! ____________________________________________________ MAJOR...GRIGGS...MURFIELD...CARROLL...DOBBINS Linda (doghouse@jefnet.com) 7 Mar 98 My Grandmother, Colleen MAJOR was born in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas October 1909. Her Parents, Samuel Collier (born 1881 in MO/TX?) and Leona (GRIGGS, born 1889 in Oklahoma, Indian Territory) MAJOR, were actors on the legitimate stage, and the reason she was born in Chanute, Kansas was that Leona's sister, Margaret 'Ethel' (GRIGGS) MURFIELD was living there at the time. I have tried searching the census records for Ethel in 1910 without success. I have tried other records too without success either. Ethel was married to Charles Adelate MURFIELD. They had a daughter named Voyle, born in 1906. Voyle married a man named CARTER. I have been having a hard time trying to find any of Leona's family because her mother, Mary Alice 'Mollie' (CARROLL) died in 1893 in Oklahoma. Their father George Washington GRIGGS remarried to a Irma DOBBINS, but George died in 1900, leaving a young widow with 2 new children of theirs plus 4 girls from his previous marriage to 'Mollie'. George and 'Mollie' (CARROLL) GRIGGS had the following children; Margaret 'Ethel', Bertha (I think I saw a census record list her as Beatrice for 1920 Oklahoma), Leona and Georgia 'Gail'. After George's death the girls were split up and never reunited again, so when my grandmother was born in Chanute, it must have been only for a short duration, as Samuel & Leona were back on the road working as actors. I have not had any luck finding Samuel or Leona in any census since 1900. I guess this was because of them always being on the road. Can anyone please help me locate any of the above people?
