Subject: Peckenpaugh | |
Author: Susan Bottom | |
Date: 16 Sep 1999 | |
Query: Looking for information on the PECKENPAUGH family who resided in Norton
Co., in about 1887. Willis Wayne (my great, great grandfather) b. 21 May 1851 in Cameron, Warren Co., IL d. 15? June 1919, Spokane, WA, m. 10 Sept 1871 in Wahoo, Saunders Co., NE to Jennie C. SHORT b. 27 May 1850 in New Kingston, Cumberland Co., PA, d. 11 July 1928 in Spokane, WA. Willis Wayne had a small wayside railway depot called "Seth" in Norton Co., KS. on Prairie Dog Creek. I believe he was the telegrapher there and possibly the station master. I believe he bought a 120 acre relinquishment of land there. My grandfather, Harvey Willis Peckenpaugh went to the small village school (don't know which one) nearby with his brother Crowney Dale Peckenpaugh. Jennie's parents Jacob H. ("Jake") and Margaret (Burney) Short lived in Indianola, Red Willow Co., NE as did most of her brothers and sisters. I do not know how long Willis Wayne and Jennie stayed in Norton Co. Both died in Spokane, Spokane Co., WA. My great grandfather's notes say that they developed "dad's 120 acres of virgin buffalo grass into a productive farm." I believe they did some farm business in Stratton. This would have been in about 1891. Harvey Willis Peckenpaugh (my great grandfather) m. in about 1986 Emma Rozella McCorkle (called Zella). She was born 25 May 1875 in Columbia, Marion Co., IA and came with her adopted parents, her aunt and uncle Joseph Lowry and Jane E. (Mathers) McCorkle to live in Benkleman, Dundy Co., NE. Any information about these individuals would be greatly appreciated. Will share whatever I have with whomever wants it. Reply: 16 Sep 1999 by Ardie Grimes http://www.livgenmi.com/nortonKS.htm shows approximately where Seth was located. The Almena, KS Centennial, 1893-1993 says, "Seth - The Burlington Railroad was built through this area in 1885. Seth was first platted in 1887 with streets and avenues, all named. There was a railway depot and stockyards on the siding. A few area residents went together to establish businesses. The land was owned by David F. McFarland and Ida H. McFarland." You could try writing to the county clerk and see if you could get a photocopy of the plat map for Seth. Frank Lockard's "History of the Early Settlement of Norton County" has no reference to Peckenpaugh family. |

Query: Montreville Alexander Morrison, b. VA, and wife Amanda found in 1880,
Norton Co. KS, Leota Twn. with three children Homer, Maggie and Charlie. What became of them? Reply: 13 Aug 1999 by Ardie Grimes from "The History of the Early Settlement of Norton County" by F. M. Lockard published 1894 Montroville Alexander Morrison was born in Virginia, November 11, 1842, and came to Keokuck county, Iowa, when a young man, and was married there to Amanda Cain. He moved to Richardson county, Nebraska, in 1868, and from there to Norton county, and settled at Leota in the fall of 1873. He took an active part in the county seat fight as a Leota man. When Frank Williams resigned the office of county Treasurer in 1874 Mr. Morrison was appointed to fill the vacancy; in 1875 he was elected to the same office, defeating C. Decker by a vote of ninety-five to eighty-two. In politic he was always a democrat. Five children were born to them, their eldest, Rila Delbert was born September 10, 1860, he was married to Mary F. Ellis March 18, 1878; they have had four children. Mrs. Morrison died June 7, 1893. Mr. Morrison has since married Ada M. Anderson and is in the mercantile business at Oronoque at this time. Leota J. Morrison, eldest daughter of Alexander Morrison was born in 1862. She was married to John T. Earle June 23, 1877; two children were born to them, both girls. After leaving here Earle took to drink, which caused domestic trouble, and finally in 1890 they separated. They both live in Atchison at this time. When the competing town was started it was called Weston, but when they asked to have a postoffice established the department declined to call it Weston; so late in the fall of 1874 a meeting was called to decide on a name. Morrison said he would give an oyster supper to the town company for the privilege of naming the future metropolis; this was promply assented to, so he named it Leota after his daughter. Mr. Morrison's second son, Homer Edward, learned the harness maker's trade after leaving here. He died at Evansville, Indiana, in December 1892. His second daughter, Maggie Eveline, is married and is now living in the state of Washington. Charley Montroville, his youngest son, lives at home with his parents. During Mr. Morrison's residence here he kept the hotel in Leota; this hotel was kept in the building that is now occupied by Newt Cope as a residence. He left here in 1884 and lived for some years in Atchison, but is now living at St.Joseph, Missouri, and is working at his trade, painting. (page 170-171) |

Born February 1861, married Alice Mae Thompson on July 3, 1892. Two children, Frederick Franklin Mittan and Sadie M. Mittan. Reply: on 21 May 1999 by Ardie Grimes The Norton County News (Historical Number, 1916) says, " Mittan, James Henry was born in Lee county, Ill, in 1852. Homesteaded in Norton county in 1873. He was deputy sheriff under C. W. Posson, and still lives in this county." No reference to Daniel, but this issue is not indexed and I could have easily missed him. |

Subject: Bisbee |
Author: author & contact info unknown; if this is your family please email us |
Date: 30 Apr 1999 |
Query: I am looking for any information about the BISBEE families who migrated
from Devizes, Ontario, Canada to Devizes, Rock Branch township, Norton county, Kansas between 1874 and 1876.
Apparently, the Bisbees founded each town. I don't know the significance of the name Devizes except that there is a town in England with the same name. Reuben, Jr. and Mary BISBEE moved with their son, Reuben III and his wife Hannah. Reuben, Jr. died January 28, 1887 in Devizes, (Norton Co.) Kansas. Mary died April 02, 1892 in Devizes, (Norton Co.) Kansas. Reuben III and Hannah moved with two children, James and Charles, and had their third child, Mary Jane BISBEE, on December 04, 1876 in Devizes, KS. Six more children were born to them in Kansas between 1878 and 1891. Reuben III died November 06, 1924 in Ford (Ford Co.) Kansas. Hannah died April 15, 1925 also in Ford (Ford Co.) Kansas. Their children were: --> James Thomas BISBEE (Born April 18, 1869 in Ontario, Canada) --> Charles Wesley BISBEE (Born August 06, 1871 in Ontario, Canada) --> Mary Jane BISBEE (Born December 04, 1876 in Devizes, Kansas) --> Eunice Amelia BISBEE (Born February 06, 1878 in Devizes, Kansas) --> Millie BISBEE (Born January 1880 in Devizes, Kansas) --> George Lawson BISBEE (Born October 1881 in Devizes, Kansas) --> Reuben Ebenezer BISBEE (Born: November 22, 1886 in Devizes, Kansas) --> Milton Haney BISBEE (Born: November 22, 1886 in Devizes, Kansas) --> Hannah Elizabeth BISBEE (Born: April 1891 in Devizes, Kansas) My great-great-grandfather, John Henry BISBEE, was another son of Reuben, Jr. and Mary BISBEE. He and his wife, Jennette (McFarland), apparently didn't move with his father and brother because he had two children in Michigan in 1875 and 1878. Somewhere between 1878 and 1880, they moved to Devizes, Norton County, Kansas because my great-grandmother, Margaret (Martha) Ann BISBEE was born on February 11, 1880 and I found them all in the 1880 U.S. census of Rock Branch township. John died 1883 in Devizes, Kansas. I don't know when or where Jennette BISBEE died. Their children were: --> James B. BISBEE (Born 1868 in London twp., Ontario, Canada) --> Margery B. BISBEE (Born 1870 in London twp., Ontario, Canada) --> Daniel BISBEE (Born 1873 in London twp. Ontario, Canada) --> Mary BISBEE (Born 1873 in London twp. Ontario, Canada) --> Ella BISBEE (Born Abt. 1875 in Michigan) --> Archie BISBEE (Born Abt. 1878 in Michigan) --> Margaret (Martha) Ann BISBEE (Born February 11, 1880 in Devizes, Kansas) Other children of Reuben, Jr. and Mary Bisbee may have also moved with them. |
