Hello! I am looking for information on a James Benton PATTERSON that came to Phillips county in the early 1880s with his mother Mary Hall PATTERSON and his brothers. They came from Iowa, but for some reason Jame's father Jacob PATTERSON did not come with them. Any information you might have on this family would be very helpful.

I am searching for information on William Duvall. I believe that he may
have been my grandfather's brother. The only information we have found
so far is that William Duvall owned The Logan House in Phillips County
and that he sold out to Matt Osborne of Belmont Township. There were
also references to Duvall and Hill which we believe was a livery barn.
We believe that the hotel was sold about November 5, 1885 and that he,
his wife and children may have left for Roseville, Ill. around November
19,1885. They had a niece named Miss Mary E. Stone who traveled with
them. If anyone has any information on this family I would greatly
appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

My g-great grandfather was Edwin Maxwell Taylor, Cloud County
pioneer.
He had a brother, Sam Taylor, wife Jane (maybe June), and
daughter Ella, also daughter Marjie, who died of Diptheria
at age 8, who homesteaded near Logan, Kansas, presumably in
Phillips County, although I don't know if its close to a county
line to where he would have been "just over" the line in
another county. We have one letter with a Logan return address
on it, dated in 1889, and another with a Phillipsburg return
address, dated 1897, from Sam.
He would have come to Phillips County in late 1870's or early
1880's, having spent some years after 1871 in Cloud County with
brother Edwin.
Am looking for Sam and descendants to make contact with

Samuel and Betsey (PIXLEY) (PHILLIPS), of Berkshire County, Mass., had
seven children, including my ancestor, Laura (Phillips) Fairchild.
Betsey (Pixley) Phillips died and Samuel married, second, 1820, Mary
McCOLLUM. They had eight children, including William Phillips, born at
Berkshire County, 2 March 1827 or 1829; died at Leavenworth, Kansas, 1
September 1856; and married, likely in Illinois, 1853, Mary Ackerson.
William Phillips was admitted to practice law in Illinois, 1854. From a
history of Great Barrington, Mass.: "William Phillips ... signed a
protest against the [election] frauds practiced. A few days after, he
was seized by a mob ... tarred and feathered, ridden upon a rail, and
sold at auction to a negro who was compelled to purchase him ... Again,
at the election of September 1, 1856, Leavenworth was invaded by a large
body of ruffians, who, under pretense of searching for arms, plundered
... Mr. Phillips refused to submit to their search, and bravely defended
his house against the assailants, killing two of them, but was shot and
killed, in his house, which was afterward burned." From another
Berkshire history: "Under pretense of searching for arms they
approached the house of William Phillips, the lawyer who had been tarred
and feathered and carried to Missouri. Phillips supposing he was to be
subjected to a similar outrage, resolved not to submit ... and stood upon
his defense. In repelling the assault of the mob, he killed two of them,
when the others burst into the house and poured a volley of balls into
his body, killing him instantly, in the presence of his wife and his
brother Jared's wife. His brother, who also was present, had an arm
badly broken with bullets, and was compelled to submit to an amputation
... After William was killed they took his law library and heaped his
books up on the street and burned them; his office and barn they burned,
and they stole his horse." Jared PHILLIPS, born 1828 or 1830;
married Eliza P. PERRY. Jared Phillips later "[was in] Washington
serving under Capt. Jim Lane, in the east room of the White House ... Jim
Lane and his company of ... Frontier Guards ... probably saved the
President's life, as all Southern men knew these men could and would
shoot." Jared Phillips was murdered by a group of Indians, while
leading a wagon train to California, in 1862. Before he died, he
fathered a son, Arthur PHILLIPS. I have never found Arthur in any census
record. William Phillips' wife, Mary Ackerson, later married another
brother, Jackson Phillips, and they went to Wisconsin. Phillips County Kansas was
named for the foregoing William Phillips. Tom Wilbur, 1784 Mirabeau

I am researching the Charles HACKEL (HECKEL,HAECKEL) family,
who lived in Phillips Co Kansas from about 1875-1880.
Charles HACKEL was born 13 SEP 1847 in Germany. He was raised
by step-parents and left home at the age of 13. He worked
around until he went into the army, and was a soldier from
1870 to 1871. A bootmaker by trade, he came to the US with
his wife-to-be on the S.S. Smidt (on its first voyage for the
Bremer Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft), bound from Bremen,
landing in New York on 4 April 1872. They lived briefly at
Pentwater MI in 1872, Niobrara NE 1873, then in Omaha NE for
3 months. From 1875-1880 they lived in Walnut Township in
Phillips County, Kansas. Phillipsburg KS. About 1881 they
moved to near Ord, Valley County, Nebraska. He died 8 March
1893 on a train trip to Texas. He was buried in the Mira
Valley Cemetery, then later moved to the Ord Cemetery.
While in Phillips County, four children were born:
Charles Emil HACKEL *20 Jun 1875
Luise HACKEL *3 Jan 1877
Edith HACKEL *13 May 1878
Katie HACKEL *13 Sep 1879.

I am searching for the death/burial place and date of my great-great
grandparents, David DODGE and Matilda BEAGLE DODGE.
According to a copy
out of an unknown book sent to me by the Phillips County Historical
Society, they moved to Kirwin in 1874.
David was born in Dutchess County,
NY around 1826.
Matilda was was from Platt Co., MO.
Their children were
Alice, Sophia, Martha (Mattie), George, Mary Anna, Charles, David Jr., and
Minnie.
David was a successful land attorney and his name appears on the
Constitution of the State of Kansas. The document that the Historical
Society sent also states that he was a member of the Blue Lodge A.F. and
A.M.
Mary Anna was my great grandmother and her obituary says "she lived
with her parents at Kirwin, and graduated from Kirwin High School". No
year was given. Mary Anna married William Clay BROWN on Aug. 5, 1890 at
Baileyville, KS. Through the years they lived in Concordia, Alton, and
finally settled in Beloit.
Alice married George B. CHAPIN on May 17, 1883
at the David DODGE residence at Kirwin.
Martha was married to Harry POWELL
- not sure of date or place. Any information on the DODGE name would be
greatly appreciated.

JOHNSON, NEFF, SNIDER, MALLOT, ROLLER
Looking for any and all information on John J. JOHNSON family who moved
to Phillips Co., KS, from Kosciusko Co., IN approx 1882.
On May 21, 1871, John J. JOHNSON married Susan SNIDER NEFF in Kosciusko
Co., IN. Susan's child Ella Azaela JOHNSON was born Jun 21, 1871. We
believe Susan was the widow of Daniel NEFF, who died Feb. 1871 in Preble
Co., OH.
John was born 22 Mar 1833 and died 16 May 1902, don't know where.
Susan was born about 1835 in Preble Co., OH. She married Daniel NEFF on
25 June 1850 in Preble Co., OH. They had 5 children born from 1851 to
1859 or thereabouts, in OH and/or IN.
At some point after Susan and John's marriage, Susan died and John
married Mary Elizabeth MALLOT (29 May 1834 - 9 Feb 1912). I don't know
if Susan died before or after the family moved to Phillips Co. in 1882,
or whether John married Mary in IN or KS.
Ella Azaela (sp. many different ways) JOHNSON married Alfred ROLLER in
28 August 1886 in Phillipsburg, Phillips Co., KS, married by H. C.
Spaulding. Al was born in Rockport, IL on 8 April 1866 and died at Agra,
KS, 27 Feb 1939. He was a farmer living north of Phillipsburg for many
years.
Ella and Al's daughter Martha Ann ROLLER (my grandmother) was born 26
June 1887. Ella filed divorce action #929 (#D361) in Phillips Co. on 13
Nov. 1889, charged abandonment. Al Roller didn't answer the peition so
Ella was awarded custody of Martha and took back her maiden name. Al was
living in Newton, Harvey Co., KS, or in McPherson, McPherson Co., KS, at
the time. (Clerk of DIstrict Court files of Phillips Co.)
Ella remarried William R. GILBERT in Alma, NE, on 4 Feb 1890. They had
ten children. They lived in the Bird City, KS, area and later to
Goodland, KS. Alfred Roller remarried Alice LAKE on 15 Sept. 1892. They
had 13 children and lived in the Phillipsburg area. Al died 27 Feb. 1939
and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Phillips Co.
Questions:
1. Who was John Johnson's wife in the 1885 Kansas census? Mary or Susan?
Is Ella listed as their child? Are there any other children?
Since they moved to Phillips Co. in 1882, the 1880 census wouldn't help;
and don't know if Ella was living back with the Johnsons in 1890.
Where are John, Susan, and Mary buried? Did John have a wife even
previous to Susan, in view of his age?
2. Who were Alfred Roller's parents and siblings if any? When did he
move to Phillips Co.?
3. Who were Mary MALLOT's parents? From where?
4. Did John Johnson adopt Ella, or just put his name on the birth
certificate because he was married to Susan at the time?
I have xerox copies of photos and/or can easily get photos of the graves
of Ella and Will GILBERT; Alfred and Alice ROLLER; Martha Ann ROLLER
LONG and Everett LONG. Also have extensive information on descendants.
Ella had more than 100 descendants at the time of her death; Martha Ann
had more than 100 descendants at the time of her death.
Thank you very much,
Carol Regehr

Would like to contact fellow researchers of the LUMPKIN family in the Phillips Co area. Robert and Elizabeth (Forest)
LUMPKIN, both born in Va., migrated to TN, then on to Randolph Co., IN. and they
are buried there. Their oldest son John LUMPKINS, born 1785, remained in
McNairy Co., TN. A small green book was printed on this family some
years ago which I bought a copy of from a LUMPKIN at his grocery store
in Phillipsburg about 1983. I have the line of descent from Robert
through his son John on down to my wife Cecelia LUMPKIN born in Havre,
Montana 1924. Though John is mentioned in the green book, his line
is not followed as the other's are.

Hi.,

My Grandmother Barbra Shuck came to Philips Co., KS in 1878 with her
parents, Zacharia T. SHUCK or SHOOK and Mary WORKMAN. They came from
Preston, MN and homesteaded south of Naponee, NE on the Kansas side of
the state line in the Phillipsburg area. My Great Grandfather Stephen
Workman had already arrived and settled in the same general area. I
compiled & printed records of the Shuck family in 1976. Also have the
Workman Family History published by Thelma C. Anderson in 1962. Will
share personal records & do look up in the Workman Book. By the way
there is a picture of the Z.T. Shuck's Kansas homestead & sod house on
my website. http://www.tigerpaw.com/bhammond/tresearch on the photo
album page.
Also have compiled and printed a book on the WILLIAMS
family, who had a branch in Phillips County as well. A few pictures of
them also in the photo album mentioned above. Welcome correspondence on
any of these families. During the dust bowl years of the depression
our family moved west, but had ties there for many years.

I am seeking in formation on the WEBER family.
George Michael WEBER born in Germany 1853, his wife also 1853 Germany. He came from
Indiana with his wife prior to 1885. He homesteaded in Phillips Co. He
first lived in a dugout in the side of a bluff, where my grandmother Amalia
Augusta was born 18 July 1885. He built a frame house, where he and
Margareta (RUPRECHT) WEBER lived until Amalia married Gottfried Gerhardt BECKMANN 14
February 1906. George built a sod house up on the hill, where he and
Margareta lived until he moved to Villa Park, CA 1912. My mother Martha
Anna C. (BECKMANN)(LEMKE) KROHN was the oldest child (12/1906) and still
living, said that the sod house had some historic value and she said a
corner was still standing in the early 1980s.
Gottfried and Amalia remained on the farm raising three children. Moved to
Orange, California 1921.
I am trying to trace George and Margareta's ancestry ; date when the
WEBER's arrived in KS; info on homestead.Note from County Coordinator,

BARKER, Samuel J. moved to Phillips County, Kansas about 1879 and lived in or near Phillipsburg. He apparently died there about 1895 and is probably buried near Phillipsburg. He migrated to Kansas from Hendricks County, Indiana. Some of his family lived in the area of Phillipsburg for a number of years then drifted westward into Colorado, Oregon and California. Any information regarding date of death and place of burial would be appreciated.
