The 1870 Beech Creek, Liberty Twp. Centre Co., PA census shows John age 25 and Susan age 24 and their 10 month old daughter Anna E. This is the same area in which John's parents James and Elizabeth Shearer and his 5 younger brothers and 1 sister lived. John was the oldest. There was one more boy born a little later. John served with the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company B, from 1864 to 1865.
John and Susan appear in the 1880 census living in Pottawatomie Co., Blue Township. They are buried in the Wamego Cemetery.
