Vol. XI No. 2 April 1997
From The President's Desk:
I was touched by the preface written by Dwayne Traynor in his story of the Pittman family (See New on our Library Shelves). He writes "The Forgotten Family of Herndon, Kansas.
They were not one of the prominent families in town but they lived in Herndon for two decades (1921 through 1940). All five of their children were born in Herndon. The oldest graduated from Herndon High School in 1939. The father worked as Town Marshall and caretaker of the town's water pumps. Before the depression he was a painter by trade. In his spare time he setup and supervised Chicken Shows and even the Annual Easter-Egg Hunt. The mother made most of the clothes the family wore. The father sometimes preached in the Congregational Church while the mother played the organ. They were looked upon as the poor family of Herndon, but only in material things, Even the poorest family should not be forgotten. You will not find this family in the Rawlins County Book. You will find them in this booklet. I am talking about the Pittman family of Herndon. Claude and Gertrude Strayer Pittman and their children; Lorraine, Strayer, Carroll, Clair and Lois.
Dwayne Traynor January 1997.
A nice addition to our Society Shelves.
