He was educated at a classical school in Rockford, Ill., at Beloit College, Wisconsin, and in 1858 entered the Illinois Normal University, where he graduated in 1861 with high honors. He was principal of the model school in this institution one year, then taught a year at Warsaw, Ill., and edited the Bloomington Pantagraph one year. He married Miss Marian Goodrich in 1864. He was county superintendent of schools of Ogle county, Illinois, and came from that position to Kansas as vice principal of the Normal School in 1865. Resigning in 1870. he became one of the founders of Arkansas City, but in 1873 he returned to Emporia and the Normal, remaining until 1875, when he went to California, teaching in the San Jose State Normal School.
