William Younkin was born in Pennsylvania in 1832, and was twenty-two years of age when he came to Kansas with his brothers.

He was a resident of Grant township, Clay county, until about 1897, when he moved to Wakefield. He married Ruth Howard in 

1863, who died in 1880; five children were born to them. In 1888 he married Elida Sheppard.
