Mr. Charles Shootes, member of the Wichita fire department was the guestof his sister, Mrs. William Jackson, 1731 Van Buren street one day last week. He is a member of Engine House, No. 5, one of the best fire companies in the west, and are always first at the scene of a fire. Thecompany is made up of solid, intelligent men who know theit duty. Mr. Shootes was born in Nashville, Tenn., and has resided in Wichita for a quarter of a century, and for many years was a leader in politics, but his present position forbids his playing the game. He stands high with the people of Wichita, and is true as steel to any trust that may be placed in him. He owns considerable valuable property both real and personal, and several good houses bring him a comfortable income. He loves his relatives and does much for them. While here he made his sister a present of $180 and the children $25. He will present his niece, Miss Claudelia Jackson with a thousand dollar home and lot when she graduates next year from Western University. He is a widower whose heart cupid's arrow has failed to pierce, but we look to hear of his surrender at most any time.
