Delmar Foster Obituary: Hays Daily News Nov. 30, 2003 JENNINGS - Delmar Foster, 62, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003. He was born April 23, 1941 in rural Sheridan County. He was a farmer and a truck driver. Survivors include his wife, Pat, of the home; two sons, Michael, and Chad, a daughter, Coleen Boxberger, and three grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Leoville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. Submitted by: John Foster FLORA KEECH Hoxie Sentinel, Hoxie, Kansas, May 9, 1912 MRS. FLORA KEECH Mrs. Flora Keech, age 29, wife of J. W. Keech, died at her home in Plainville, Monday morning at 4 o'clock. The remains were brought to Hoxie and funeral services were held at the Christian Church Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock, conducted by Elder Park, of Palco, and interment was made in the Hoxie cemetery. Flora Rosenkrans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Rosenkrans, was born in Sheridan County, September 28, 1883, and was united in marriage with J. W. Keech, August 28, 1899. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Keech continued to reside in Sheridan County for about ten years, moving to Plainville about three years ago. Mrs. Keech is survived by her husband, two sons, Charles and Harmon, aged 11 and 9 years, respectively, father, mother, one brother, and three sisters. Her father and mother, brother and sisters are all residents of Sheridan County. Mrs. Keech had many friends in Sheridan County, where she was born and grew to womanhood, and her untimely death will be a source of much sorrow to all who knew and admired her for her many lovable qualities as daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. ISABEL KERR Mrs. Isabel Kerr, 69, former Avon resident, died Monday afternoon in a Stanwood nursing home following a lengthy illness. She was born December 30, 1893 in Hoxie, Kans., where she was united in marriage to James E. Kerr, Jan. 1, 1912. The family moved to Colorado and later came to the Avon community in 1939. Mr. Kerr died in 1941, and Mrs. Kerr has made her home in Auburn since 1955. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Swenson, Burlington, Mrs. Lois Clark, Mount Vernon, and Mrs. Louise Kee, Auburn; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Viola Kerr, Burlington. Memorial services will be held Monday, July 22, at 1:30 p.m. from the chapel of the Hulbush Funeral Home with the Rev. James E. Doak of the Burlington First Methodist Church officiating. Final resting place will be in the family plot of the Loveland, Colo. Cemetery. Submitted by Merelene Bockway WAYNE KNOPP Hoxie Sentinel - 11 Sep 1919 A CHILD TAKEN Hoxie friends of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Knopp were pained to learn Monday, of the sudden death of their little son, Wayne, following a brief illness of summer complaint. He was a bright, manly little boy of only eight summers, their only child. Naturally, he was the pride and joy of the home, and like all kind parents, their energies were bent in providing for his welfare and comfort, and in their sad bereavement, the grief stricken parents have the kindness sympathy of all their many friends. Funeral services were held at the home in Selden Tuesday and burial made in the Hoxie cemetery. Rev. Griffiths had charge of the services at Selden and Rev. Haberly performed the last sad rites at the cemetery at Hoxie. Submitted by: Frank Knopp A.H. Knopp Hoxie Sentinel - 22 Dec 1949 A large circle of close friends and acquaintances were grieved when it was learned that Anton “Tony” Knopp had passed away suddenly Thursday afternoon, Dec 15. This familiar figure had been missed downtown for several days because of an attack of flu, but was apparently on the road to recovery and had been downtown several times that day greeting friends, when his sudden and final illness struck. He was taken to his home where he passed away after a short time. Funeral services were held from St. Frances Church, Hoxie Monday morning with Rev. M. Mulihill in charge, and interment was in the Hoxie Cemetery beside his son who had passed away in September, 1919. Anton Henry Knopp was born June 30, 1883 at Bennet, Nebr., the son of Anton T. Knopp, Sr., and Susie Stall, and died at his home Dec. 15, 1949, aged 66 years, five months and 15 days. After growing to manhood in Nebraska, Anton came to Kansas with his brother, Thomas in 1909 settling on a farm southwest of Selden. On Oct. 10 he was united in marriage to Eva Menefee, of Hoxie. The drought in Kansas forced them back to Nebraska that year. In 1916 they returned to Kansas again, settling on a farm near Menlo for a while. One child, Donald Wayne, was born of their union in 1911 and died at Selden in September, 1919 and was interred in the Hoxie cemetery. Besides his widow, he is survived by five brothers, Thomas and George, of Selden; Louis, Willie and Bernard, of Bennet, Neb.; the sisters, Mrs. Susie Helus of Valparaso, Neb., and Anna Mumm, of Seattle, Wash. For 25 years Anton ran a Shoe Shop at Hoxie until failing health forced his retirement three years ago. He was loved by; the children of the town to whom he was the essence of kindness and understanding. His funeral at St. Frances Church Monday was unusually large. On April 14, 1915 he was married to Julia Mumm. To this union were born four children, Vincent of Selden; Viola Lindeman, Menlo; Louise Schumacher, Hickman Mills, Mo.; and Clarence of Seattle, Wash. He lived on his farm southeast of Selden until he retired about 10 years ago when he moved to Selden. His health has been poorly for the last five years. He was bedfast since November of last year. The last four months he spent at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oliver Lindeman near Menlo under the loving care of his wife. He is survived by his wife and four children; also four brothers, George of Selden; Louis of Lincoln, Neb.; Bernard and William of Bennett, Neb.; and two sisters, Anna Mumm of Seattle, Wash.; and Susie Helus of Phoenix, Ariz. She was stricken with a heart attack in church and died almost instantly during the middle of the Mass. A Requiem High Mass was offered by the Rev. P. L. Cronin July 7 in the Sacred Heart Church of Selden. Burial was in the parochial cemetery. Mrs. Knopp lived on a farm near Selden most of her life. Several years ago she moved near the church where she spent much of her time before the Blessed Sacrament. Surviving are two sons, Vincent of Selden and Clarence of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Viola Lindeman, Menlo and Mrs. Louise Schumacher, Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Geary, Denver, Mrs. Cecelia Stegeman, Concordia, Mrs. Helena Diederich, Selden; and one brother, Fred Mumm of Selden. Submitted by: Frank Knopp George Joseph Knopp - 18 Feb 1891-14 Jan 1961 George J. Knopp, the fifth son of Anton and Susan Stall Knopp, was born Feb. 18 1891 near Bennet, Nebr. He died at Selden, Jan. 14, 1961. Funeral services were held in the Sacred Heart Church of Selden at 9:00 a.m., Jan. 17, 1961. Rev. P. L. Cronin officiated at the Requiem High Mass. Interment was in the Selden Cemetery. Most of his early life was spent in Lancaster County, Nebr. He came to Sheridan County, Kans., in 1921 and in 1932 he purchased a farm northwest of Selden located in Decatur County. On Oct 20, 1936 George was married to Emma Blickenstaff of Oberlin. He brought his bride to his farm which was their home until they retired to Selden about a year ago. To this union three children were born. John, 23, and Marvin, 18, who are now operating the farm and Leona Marie, 21 now Sister Mary Roberta, a member of the Dominican Order at Great Bend. Sister Roberta currently is at Sacred Heart College, Wichita. Beside his wife and children he is survived by three brothers, Louis of Lincoln, Nebr., Bernard and Will of Bennet, Nebr., two sisters, Mrs. Anna Mumm of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Susie Helus of Phoenix, Ariz., also a number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. (Blickenstaff) Knopp - 11 Jun 1898-16 May 1961 THE SELDEN ADVOCATE, Thursday, January 19, 1961 Mrs. George Knopp Dies at Hospital In Colby Mrs. George (Emma) Knopp, 62, passed away Tuesday morning, May 16th, at the St Thomas Hospital in Colby. Though she hadn’t been too well she became seriously ill only a few days prior to her death. Mr. Knopp preceded her in death in January this year. She leaves three children, Sister Mary Roberta of Great Bend, and John and Marvin of the home. Besides other relatives and friends. Mrs. Knopp taught school several years before her marriage to Mr. Knopp. She had lived on a farm since, until moving to Selden last year. Funeral services will be held Friday morning. Submitted by: Frank Knopp Peter Paul Mumm - 29 Jun 1884-29 Jul 1936 THE SELDEN, KS ADVOCATE, Thursday, Aug 6, 1936 Peter Paul Mumm, second son of Gotfried and Crecentia Mumm was born, June 29, 1884 at Selden, Kansas, and departed this life July 29, 1936 at St. Catherine’s Hospital at McCook, Nebr. At the age of fifty two years and one month. He was united in marriage to Miss Annie Marie Knopp, October 12, 1915 at St. Michaels Church, Cheney, Nebraska. To this union were born twelve children, Valeria, Marie, Dorothy, John, Joe, Genevieve, Julia, Ida Maie, Bernard and Donald, all at home and two infants preceded him in death. He also leaves five sisters, Mrs. Grace Andrijeski, St. Ann, Nebr.; Mrs. Lena Deiderich, Selden; Mrs. Celia Stegeman, Leoville; Mrs. Lizzie Geary, Norton, Mrs. Julia Knopp, Selden; and one brother, Fred Mumm of Selden and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Jan. 16, 1893. She was a daughter of Anthony and Susan Knopp. She died at Seattle, Wash., Dec. 19, 1973 at the age of 81 years. She was taken ill in Sept. and had been in the hospital and nursing home since that time. She was married to Peter Mumm Oct. 12, 1915 at Palmyra, Nebr. They lived in Selden where Peter was manager of the Farmers Union. They had 12 children, two daughters died in infancy and her husband passed away July 29, 1936. She lived to Seattle, Wash. where in 1945 she has made her home since this time. She has been a member of the Catholic Church all her life. She was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Leoville to Frank and Mary Ann (Heim) Meitl. She was an elementary school teacher, retiring in 1986. Survivors include her husband, Vincent, Wichita; five sons, Frank and Tony, both of Colorado Springs, Steve, Russell, Tim, Kansas City, Kan., and Carl, Olathe; four daughters, Barbara Mueller, Huntington, Beach, Calif., Mary Hessenflow, Beloit, Anita Doll, Binghamton, N.Y., and Agnes Ward, Wichita; three sisters, Rosalia Stephens, Jennings, Helen Kruse, Hudson, Colo., and Rita Martin, Colby; 23 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. November 8, 1959. Due to a heart condition he passed away at St. Thomas hospital, February 28, 1960 at the age of three months and 20 days. Submitted by: Frank Knopp Henrietta M. Ackerman The Hays Dailey News Oct. 19, 2004 Henrietta Margaretha Ackerman, 107, Hoxie, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Hoxie. She was born on Nov. 2, 1896, in Thomas County to Theodore and Christiana Rall. She married Henry G. Ackerman on Aug. 28, 1919. He died in 1963. She farmed with her husband. Survivors include three sons, Carl Ackerman, Amarillo, Texas, Richard Ackerman, Beloit, and Robert Ackerman, Park; a daughter Irene Deschner, Beloit; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Gilbert Ackerman. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church; burial in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church. Garrett CHARLES LOUIS ROSENKRANS Hoxie Sentinel - January 16, 1913 AN OLD TIMER GONE Charles Louis Rosenkrans Dies After a Long Illness Last Thursday afternoon this community was made one of sadness by the announcement that Charles Rosenkrans one of the county's oldest and most highly respected citizens was dead. For several months Mr. Rosenkrans has been in feeble health and for some time it has been known that the end was not far off and yet when the announcement came that he had answered the final summons it caused much of a shock among those who had known him from early manhood. No more honorable man, no better neighbor or citizen ever lived in Sheridan County than Charles Louis Rosenkrans, and the entire community mourns with the bereaved family his demise. Charles Louis Rosenkrans was born in Jersey Shore, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, April 12, 1853, at which place he resided until 13 years of age, he then moved to St. Joseph county, Michigan, and was there married to Miss Sarah Ann Wesby in the year 1875. The following year he moved to Decatur county, Kansas, making that his home until 1882, when he settled two miles south of Hoxie, where he died January 9, 1913, after a lingering illness. Mr. Rosenkrans was the father of nine children, four of whom survive him as follows: Mrs. Wm. Kerr, Mrs. James Kerr, Mrs. Albert Mitchell and Harm Rosenkrans, all of Hoxie, who, with the wife, three sisters, and two brothers mourn the loss of a father, husband and brother. Yes, Charley Rosenkrans is dead: A good man has gone to his reward and the community mourns. The funeral was conducted Saturday from Hoxie M.E. church by Rev. George Winters who paid a beautiful tribute to the departed when he quoted: "Let me live in my house by the side of the road. Where the race of men go by -- The men that are good, the men that are bad, as good and as bad as I. Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat, or hurl the cynic's ban. Let me live in my house by the side of the road, And be a friend to man." Rosenkrans and Children Submitted by Merelene Bockway SARAH ANNA (WESBY) ROSENKRANS The Hoxie Sentinel -- March 24, 1921 A PIONEER LADY IS CALLED HOME In the sudden death of Mrs. Rosenkrans this county has lost one of it's earliest settlers. Few people who have passed on life's pathway the stone that marks the 63 rd year of terrestrial life, may count forty-five such markers all identified with the history and well being of Sheridan county. To spend forty-five years in a country in the making, is proof in itself of the nobility of character and kindly instincts of those who are thus privileged. Mrs. Rosenkrans was always proud of her long citizenship here and loyal to the soil that she had so long trod. In the early days of every new country there is always an opportunity to loan a helping hand to the sick and afflicted, and this good lady, like Whittier said of his mother, never stopped to ask about creed or state but gladly performed her part, in comforting the unfortunate and needy. In fact she never grew weary in well doing, and has left behind her a kind and tender memory that will remain precious to her friends and loved ones, Peace to her soul. OBITUARY Sarah Anna Wesby was born in South Milford, Indiana, March 28, 1857, and passed away at Hoxie, March 20, 1921, following a brief illness, at the age of 63 years, 11 months, and 19 days. She was united in marriage to Charles Rosenkrans at *** Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo county, Michigan, July 20, 1875 and to them nine children were born, four of whom survive her, Harm Rosenkrans and Mrs. Viola Kerr of Hoxie, and Mrs. Isabelle Kerr, of Woodrow, Colorado, and Mrs. Dot Mitchell of Siebert, Colorado. The deceased came with her husband to Sheridan County in 1876 and took up a homestead three miles south of Hoxie, where she made her home until called to the Great Beyond. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church Tuesday after, conducted by Rev. C.A. Davis, the pastor, and all that was mortal of this kindly lady was laid to rest in the Hoxie cemetery. *** Information correction made from original documents. Submitted by Merelene Bockway GRACIE MABEL ROSENKRANS The Weekly Sentinel -- October 24, 1884 DIED ----- Gracie Mabel daughter of Charles and Annie Rosenkrans, Monday October 20. Aged 8 years, 7 months and twenty days. Gracie had been sick ever since January, most of the time a helpless invalid, and though the parents deeply feel the loss of their child yet it is her great gain. She sleeps now and is at rest. She leaves two little brothers and one sister to mourn, weep and wait until it shall please Him who rules the earth and sky, presides over the living, small and great, to call parents and children, brothers and sisters, to His holy presence. Submitted by Merelene Bockway JESSE BRYAN ROSENKRANS Unknown Newspaper, Hoxie Kansas -- October 1896 Died: On October 8th, 1896, Jesse B. Rosenkrans, aged 18 years and 6 days. It will probably never be known how the young man received the injuries which caused his death. He had been working for Willis Johnson southwest of town for about four months past, and it was at Mr. Johnson's where the accident occurred. He had been riding a gentle horse, and it is supposed the animal fell with him throwing him on the ground in such a way as to cause concussion of the brain and spine. The accident occurred Sunday, October 4, and his death October 8, during which time the young man was unconscious. Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian Church by Rev. James and the remains were laid to rest in the Hoxie Cemetery. This is indeed a hard blow to Mr. Rosenkrans and family. Jesse was a young man of promise and the misfortune was all the more keenly felt because of his being taken away in the midst of good health and at the very beginning of a career of usefulness. The bereaved parents have the profound sympathy of the entire community. Submitted by Merelene Bockway HARMON ROSENKRANS The Hoxie Sentinel - June 1961 ROSENKRANS RITES HELD JUNE FIFTH *Former County Sheriff Dies In Colorado* Harm Rosenkrans, 80, former Sheridan County Sheriff and one of the area's pioneer citizens, died unexpectedly Thursday morning June 1, at Lamar Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. Rosenkrans had gone to Lamar to attend high school graduation exercises of a granddaughter, Nadine Rosenkrans, and to visit relatives and friends. Mr. Rosenkrans became ill May 29 and died three days later at the Lamar Hospital as the result of a heart ailment. *Rites Monday* Funeral Services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Hoxie Presbyterian church by Rev. Todd MacDonald. Burial was at Hoxie. Harm Rosenkrans was born on a farm in Decatur county Nov. 8, 1880, a son of Charles L. and Sarah (Wesby) Rosenkrans. The family moved to Sheridan County when he was a small child and he lived here throughout most of his life. He married Ida Montgomery May 23, 1900. The couple observed their 61st wedding anniversary last month. *Served as Sheriff* * *Mr. Rosenkrans was one of the area's well known farmers and stock men for many years. He served six terms as sheriff of Sheridan county, and was Republican county chairman for a number of years. The family moved to Lamar in 1947 and Mr. Rosenkrans was employed there by the city water department until his retirement in 1955. They moved back to Hoxie in 1959. Survivors include his wife Ida, one son Dorrance of Fillmore, Calif., one daughter, Mrs. J, Peary Lewis of Hoxie; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. C. B. Rosenkrans of Lamar; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Kerr of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Mrs. Isabelle Kerr of Auburn, Wash.; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Clarence, one brother and three sisters. Submitted by Merelene Bockway IDA S. ROSENKRANS HOXIE, KANSAS - SEPTEMBER 14, 1967 Ida S. Montgomery was born May 19, 1883 in Lincoln County, Kansas, and passed away Sept. 4, 1967, at the age of 84 years, three months and a few days. She was the daughter of Chester Lyon Montgomery and Phoebe Ann (Lawrence) Montgomery and grew to womanhood and attended schools in the Lincoln, Kansas area. She had two brothers, George Russell Montgomery and Arthur Montgomery; two sisters, Mary Feaker and Eva Harvey. All have preceded her in death with the exception of her sister Eva Harvey of Merced, Calif. She was united in marriage to Harm Rosenkrans on May 23, 1900 at Hoxie, Kansas. The ceremony was performed at Harm's fathers ranch a few miles south of Hoxie, the Charles L. Rosenkrans homestead ranch site, where they later lived and raised their family. This marriage ceremony was solemnized by one of the truly old timers, Probate Judge Gregg of Sheridan County. This marriage was blessed with three children, Clarence B.(Cap), born May 3, 1901; Dorrance L., born Nov. 10, 1906, and E. Maxine, born Feb. 11, 1916. Her son Clarence passed away Jan. 16, 1960; her husband Harm passed away June 1, 1961, and then Dorrance passed away Aug. 7, 1965. Deep sorrow and heart-ache seemed to follow the family for years, but through all this, she bore her burdens well, with a sincere Christian faith that it was God's will and part of his great plan. Mrs. Rosenkrans was a member of the Presbyterian church and attended services regularly as long as her health permitted. She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter Maxine Lewis and husband, Peary Lewis; one sister, Eva Harvey of Merced, Calif.; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Bernice (Ward) Rosenkrans of Lamar, Colo., and Stella (Morgan) Rosenkrans of Fillmore, Calif.; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives, all remembering Aunt Ida. Words are hardly enough to express the thoughts and feelings that we all share in the loss of our loved one, Mother, Grandmother, counsel, adviser and a true and sincere friend and neighbor. Needless to say, Grandma, your place will never be filled and only time will dim the many, many beautiful and loving memories, and may God grant you the tender care and love that you have given us. Relatives from out of town to attend the funeral services for Mrs. Rosenkrans on Sept. 6, were; Mr. and Mrs. Herb Welden of Dalhart, Tex.; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Rosenkrans, Mrs. Bernice Rosenkrans, Beulah Ward, all of Lamar, Colo.; and Mrs. Henry Montgomery and daughter-in-law of Bunker Hill, Kans., Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lewis of Colby, and Mrs. Maxine Lewis, Linda and Sonny of Ft.
