O'Brien, Whittington

I am looking for any information regarding the family of Elmer George O'Brien B:Aug 24, 1845 in Indiana D: July 26, 1923, I am assuming in Wellington since 1895-1920 Census shows the family there for a 25 yr span. Married to Julia A Whittington. Children are Nora, Lillian, Dean, Harry, Robert, Earl and possibly a Clara, George E, Fred and maybe 3 more. I was told by another family member on this particular branch that the Spanish Flu epidemic killed many of them and possibly only 3-4 of the children lived to maturity. We know Nora, Robert and Lillian survived. Robert was the only child of these 3 to marry and have children. Nora and Lillian never married.
Elmer George was the Sheriff of Humboldt County at some point in time and then sold hardware until retirement. 1895 Census shows him being a travelling salesman at this time. I searched all the website cemetary postings and found nothing. If anyone has any information on these O'Briens please contact me. Also, if anyone in Wellington is doing any cemetary research and finds any of these O'Briens burial plots please let me know.
Thank you very much! Suezy O'Brien House-Olathe, Kansas

FOLKS

I am a great great great niece of Captain John H. Folks who was a founding editor of the Sumner County Press. He and my great grandfather Willis K. Folks were well-respected men of the community. We are looking for articles written by Captain Folks or pictures of him or my great grandfather. He emigrated to California , South of San Diego and was very entrepreneurial here in agriculture and politics.

Gooch, Clark/Clarke, Francis, Allison, Wells

Hi,

The Sumner County families I am interested in are ancestors and descendants of Joseph Franklin Gooch and his wife Willa Mina Clark/Clarke and their siblings.

Willa Mina Clark/Clarke Gooch had a brother Samuel Vance Clark/Clarke who married Sarah J. Allison. Sarah had a sister Mary Elizabeth Allison who married Ransom Wells. The Allison girls are believed to be daughters of James K. Allison and Harriet Burr or Barr.

Willa Mina's parents were George Washington Clark/Clarke and Sarah Jane Powell and they had quite a large family. I have seen some postings which listed Samuel as her father but he was her brother.

Joseph F. Gooch came from West Virginia, via Illinois, with sister Alvira, brother John and their mother Eveline Gooch. They were from Ohio County, WV, and his father William Gooch died about 1860, probably before his youngest sibling, Mary, was born in December 1860. By 1875 Joseph and siblings were residing in Kansas in Palatine Township.

Am hoping to make contact with other descendants with more information. Thanks for any help you can give.

HAEBERLE

I am looking for information about Charles and Myrtle Haeberle. According to WWI Draft Registration for Charles (Charley), they farmed near Conway Springs. They had 2 daughters, Dorothy and Doris. Charley was born in 1884 but I do not know if he was born in Sumner Co. I know that by 1930 he and the 2 girls lived in Wichita. I do not know what happened to Myrtle. Sometime after 1930 Charley married my aunt, Mable Edna Hamm in Wichita. It was there and in that relationship that I knew him. I think, when he died, he was buried with Myrtle which may be in Sumner Co. I would appreciate any information anyone might have on this family. Thank you very much.

LEVAGOOD

Am looking for any information on Alice Maude Levagood, born in Michigan in 1862 to David & Phoebe Levagood, graduated from Park College, Parksville, Mo 1882, returned to her home in southern Kansas (possibly the Rue family), taking a position teaching in a government school @ Anadarko, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). 26Mar1884 she married Henry Newton Brown, Marshall of Caldwell, Kansas.

Subsequent to his death, she moved to Devils Lake, North Dakota, proving up on 100 acres of land. Subsequently she attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, commencing a two year period of studies leading to her teaching degree in 1889. In 1891 she moved to Frankfort, Indianna working for Drs. Strange & Palmer, eventually becoming matron of the Palmer Hospital, retiring in 1931 and passing away on May 25, 1935 and is buried in Frankfort, Indianna. At some point in her life she was adopted by Mr & Mrs Richard Rue, a brick manufacturer originally of Richmond, Indianna. The Rue family moved to Devil's Lake, N.D. in 1883, changing their name to LaRue. Any info as to her parentage, birthplace in Michigan and subsequent adoption would be greatly appreciated. I would also be willing to share any and all information that I have on other members of the Levagood family who were also residents of Kansas,Michigan,Ontario,Ohio, and Pennsylvania

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

SIMPSON / MOORE / SURFACE

I'm looking for information on my great-aunt Mary Elizabeth Simposn and her husband, Madison Ora Moore. The story in my family is that they both lived in Indiana and were cousins. Mary Elizabeth's father died and her mother remarried. After that, Mary Elizabeth was sent to live in Kansas with relatives (possibly Simpson, Surface or Moore). Madison either accompanied or followed Mary Elizabeth to Kansas and they were married. I have a photograph of them that I think was their wedding picture. It was taken at State National Art Gallery in Wellington. As their first child was born 6 Sep 1894 in KS, I would assumed the photograph was taken between 1890 and 1893.

Any information would be appreciated,

Virginia Winters

My relatives from Wellingtonin Sumner County were Bohanna's and Broderson's. I believe that oneBohanna was mayor of Wellington for a short time. A. F. Bohanna, mygrandfather, owned property in downtown Wellington, and was marriedto Grace I. Bohanna--their only child was my mother, Ruth IreneBohanna, who married Walter Jacobus Broderson, my father. My father'sfather, P. A. Broderson, owned a jewelry store in Wellington, but mayhave farmed near Douglass, Kansas, before that.

RHOADES

For two years I've been onthe hunt for the family of Samuel W. Rhoades. Hunting on the internetis absolutely THE best, but so far I've spent a lot of time headingfor dark passageways that dead-end. Perhaps someone out here will beable to offer some assistance.

I have a marriage licensedated 28Feb1892 in Drury. Samuel W. Rhoades married Cassie ElizabethMcCombs at the ripe old age of 21 years (she was 16y). Thecertificate was signed by a Minister of the Gospel, J.B.Lowry, thejudge was J. W. Chapman. On the certificate it claims Cassie was "C.M. McCombs" which is unusual since there was no reason to hide heridentity.

Charles McComb and his thenbride, Mary (Hinant) Bailey had moved to Caldwell for two yearsbefore the Cherokee Strip was opened in 1893. Mr. McCombs steeledland near Eddy. As Cassie was yet a teen, I believe she moved withher dad (the only parent she had). I further believe it was in thisarea that she met and fell in love with Sam (a proud youngCherokee).

I've been told that Sam'sfather was born in 1792. (This tidbit came from the family....) Itseems that his father would have then been one of the most virileseniors around! I would rather think this man was the grandfather. Onthe family papers it says that Sam was born in Missouri, AndrewCounty, I believe. In looking there for kin, I foundnothing.

There must be someone who hasa connecting point for this man. Because he was Cherokee, I looked onthe rolls for him as well, but he, himself, isn't on there. I do knowthat he was a full-blood, but cannot link him to a mother either.(His son, Charlie carried a card.)

I would appreciate any helpoffered. This seems to be my temporary brick wall.

BYERS

I would like to solicit anyhelp I can get in finding more information on the following family:James Anders BYERS. One of his sons, Theodore E.Byers, appears to have found his way west into CA and then residedfor quite some time in Spokane, WA, where he died in 1990 at the ageof 87. Theodore left a legacy in one short note that he sent to agenealogy publication.
