CUSTER
Raymond Earl Custer was born August 22, 1892 near Marion, Kansas, and as a small child, moved with his parents to Menard County, Illinois, where he grew up. He returned to Kansas as a young man and enrolled at Hays Normal. His education was interrupted by World War I and he did overseas duty in France. After the war he returned to Fort Hays University, graduating in 1919. He received his Master's Degree in Education from Kansas University in 1928. He taught schools in Illinois and Kansas. He came to WaKeeney in the fall of 1928 where he was principal of Trego Community High School for nineteen years. In 1947, he went to work for the State Department of Education, working for ten years, after which he retired. He died December 6, 1974.

In December, 1919, Raymond married Edna Walker and they were the parents of one son, Raymond E. Custer, Jr. They lived in Gove, Kansas where he taught school. Edna died June 7, 1925.


On June 30, 1927, Raymond married Eva Walker at WaKeeney. They were the parents of four children, Charles Francis, Jean Anne, Kathleen Kay, and Sara Beatrice.

Eva Walker was born November 17, 1902, on her parents farm northwest of WaKeeney, where she grew up. She attended T.C.H.S. and College of Emporia at Emporia, graduating in 1924. She taught school, at the high school level, for three years, one year at Kinsley and two at Gove. Eva died in 1997, Raymond Earl, Edna & Eva, they are all burried in the WaKeeney Cemetery.
