OBITUARY of JOHN EBELING
John Martin Ebeling was born at Nieustadt, Germany, October 23, 1838; died at his horn near Collyer, Kansas May 21, 1918, being nearly eighty years old at the time of his death. Mr. Ebeling came to America with his parents when he was about fifteen years old. They settled in Chicago where he grew to man hood and from of the United States, being mustered in at Pekin, Illinois, September 13, 1861 as a private in Co. A., 44th Ill., Vol. Inf. He was mustered out with the: rank of 1st Lieutenant September 25.. 1865, after more than four year's valiant service, Two years later, August 14,1867, John Ebeling and Mary Linde were married in Chicago, & to them, eight children were born three sons & five daughters. He is survived by his aged companion, their daughters, Hannah Ebeling, Mrs. I. E. Miller, Mrs. E.F. Elliott, of Collyer township, Mrs. C. M. Krhut, of, Flagler, Colorado; and their son, Gus Ebeling, of Nevada, Missouri.
. Mr. and Mrs. Ebeling, came with their family to Trego county, Apri1 25, 1879, settling on a homestead in Collyer township, and ,have remained here steadfastly through their almost forty years of faithful pioneer life- quiet, law-abiding, good, loyal American citizens. In religion Mr. Ebeling was a Lutheran, in politics a Republican, but first of all a good neighbor and faithful friend. Funeral services for the deceased were held at the Baptist church in Collyer, last Thursday afternoon, May 23rd, conducted by Rev. C. 0. Baker and funeral director S. J. Straw and attended by a large concourse of friends. The Collyer State Guards, were also in attendance, together with .3 color guard and firing squad from the Wa-Keeney guards. Interment 'was made in the Collyer Union Cemetery where the G. A. R. burial service was read by Comrade Hugh Tidball who is almost the only surviving member of the once strong Collyer post. One by one the old guard is "going over" but their places will be taken speedily by worthy successors. Mrs, Ebeling and family have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends who join with us in offering condolences in their hour of sorrow. .
