OBITUARY of Robert W. HECKMAN

Robert Wilson Heckman was born October 6, 1912, at WaKeeney, Kansas, to Jacob Herman 7 jane Elizabeth (Wilson) Heckman. He passed away in Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit at WaKeeney on November 22, 1999, at the age of 87 years, I month, 16 days.

He was a lifetime area resident. Bob graduated from Trego Community High School at WaKeeney with the Class of 1930, & from the College of Emporia at Emporia, Kansas, with the Class of 1935. On January 28, 1942, he was united in marriage with Susan (Stone) Heckman. She survive, of their home in WaKeeney. Bob was inducted into the United States Army on July 28, 1943. He served his country during World War II, attained the rank of Captain, & was honorably discharged on May 19, 1946.

Bob was a past president of the Trego WaKeeney State Bank of WaKeeney. His involvement with the bank spanned 42 years, & included being an advisory director at the time of his death. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where he was a longtime church treasure, a past trustee & elder, & the only chairperson of the Hutchison Memorial Scholarship Committee, which was first awarded in 1983. Bob was a 50 year member of the American Legion. Moore Post #179, & a lifetime member of Cedar Bluff Yacht Club. He was a past member of the Kansas Bankers Association, & a member of the Board of Directors of the Trego WaKeeney State Bank. Bob was an avid sailor, organized sailing regattas throughout the Midwest. He enjoyed the simple things in life.

Other survivors include two sons, Bruce & wife, Irene, & Kent & wife Deb.,& grandchildren, Cary Heckman, Kyley, & Kade Heckman. He was preceded in death by a son, Scot, a daughter, Sana Kay, & three brothers, Harold, Douglas, & John Heckman. Memorial services for Bob Heckman were Tuesday, November 30, 1999, at the Presbyterian Church at WaKeeney, Kansas, with Revernd Marilyn Gamm officiating. Interment was in the WaKeeney City. Cemetery. Schmitt Funeral Home of WaKeeney handled the arrangements. Memorials for Bob Heckman may be made to the Presbyterian Church, or to Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital Endowment Fund.. Memorials may be left in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N. 12th., WaKeeney, Ks. 37372. Submitted by Gayle M. Garrett
