Carroll and Eva Claycamp Smith:

Eva Claycamp Smith was born December 16, 1913, on the family farm in Trego County, Kansas, to Edward and Emma (Tegtmeyer) Claycamp. She passed away August 28, 2003, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas. Eva was 89 years of age.

Carroll Smith was born December 23, 1912, in Beloit, KS, to Homer and Anna Salisbury Smith. He passed away October 22, 2003, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas. Carroll was 90 years of age.

Eva attended Walker rural Trego County School. Carroll attended school in Arnold, Kansas, Fort Hays State University and Pittsburg State University.

He and Eva resided much of their lives in Trego County, having also lived in Topeka, Kansas and Boulder, Colorado. Carroll was a former Trego County Clerk, an agent for Business Men's Assurance Company, and worked as a linotype operator for the Western Kansas World, Adams Brothers Salesbook Company in Topeka, Kansas, and the Boulder Daily Camera. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, along with many other medals and commendations, he was awarded the Bronze Star for valor.

On February 12, 1935, Carroll and Eva were united in marriage at the Methodist Parsonage in WaKeeney, Kansas. They were married 68 years. Eva was the one love of Carroll's life. When she passed away, his health began a steady decline.

Eva was a homemaker. She was an avid gardener, and at family gatherings everyone enjoyed her cooking.

Carroll was a gifted handyman and could fix almost anything. He enjoyed mechanical repair, and was a determined and strong-willed man who kept his own counsel. He was a former member of the American Legion in WaKeeney. Carroll and Eva were members of the United Methodist Church in WaKeeney.

Survivors include two sons, Stanley Smith and his wife, Francine, of Topeka, and Ronald Smith of Hays; two daughters, Kathleen Luttrell of Surprise, AZ, and Maxine Cain of Marathon, FL; four grandchildren, Kelly Payne and her husband Mark of Lake Havasu City, AZ, David Smith of Edmond, OK, Deanna Smith of Overland Park, KS and Nathan Cain of Marathon, FL; 1 great grandchild, Kai Palama of Kauai, HI; other survivors include, Elaine McStay, (Eva's sister), and her husband, Harold, of Craig, CO.

Eva was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Ernest, Edwin and Elven Claycamp; a sister, Ella Neff; and a granddaughter, Deborah Luttrell. A brother Crusen Smith and a sister Olive Salisbury preceded Carroll in death.

Their family and friends will lovingly remember them for many years to come.
