Viola Pearl Butcher Wanker, daughter of George & Grace (Hays) Butcher was

were early pioneers of Trego County. She attended a one-room country grade
school graduating in 1921 at the age of 11. She graduated from Trego Community
High School in 1926 & began teaching career in a one-room country school at the
early age of 16, a career which she continued for 35 years, being last employed
as a First Grade Teacher in WaKeeney Grade School. She earned a B.S. degree at
Hays Teachers College, Hays, Kansas.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodest Women,
Martha Circle of WaKeeney, & past member of the waKeeney Chapter of Delta Kappa
Gramma National Teachers Sorority. On December 25, 1937, she was united in
marriage with William Herbert Wanker at her parentsŐ home.
He preceded her in death on June 21, 1992. Both were lifetime residents of the
area.
Pearl is survived by two sisters; Frances Robert, & Lillie Eckman, & many nieces
& nephews through several generations became her children.
She was the middle daughter, wedged between two sisters & as such filled their
lives with sweetness, compassion & love. Her hobbies included all kinds of
hand-work, crocheting, embroidering, knitting & fabric painting. Each year at
Christmas family members received hand-made gifts without fail, & she shared her
talents with her church, making decorations for any occasion.
Another legacy to all is her sense of humor; her laughter & happiness. No matter
what situation was at hand she always found something amusing.
The love she gave us will be carried in our hearts always & Pearl will be
remembered by all who knew her abundance of love & generosity.
Burial was in the WaKeeney City
Cemetery, WaKeeney, Kansas.
