Map from History of Kansas, Noble Prentis, (Winfield: E.P. Greer. 1899)

Washington County, Kansas is rich with history and the pioneering spirit, from the Oregon and Mormon Trails and the Pony Express to the farmers and ranchers who stayed to build their homes and till the soil. My name is Jim Scheetz and I'll be your host for this web site. My own ancestors were among the early pioneers in this county, from grandma Frances Klataske, born on the ship when her parents emigrated from Germany, to grandpa Wilhelm Losemann who stayed at a convent in Cleveland before venturing to Washington County; from grandma Elizabeth Rose Schwartz who was six years old when she traveled by covered wagon with her parents and first lived in a dugout home in the Kansas soil, to great grandpa Gabriel Scheetz who made the trip from Ohio with ten children in tow. Most families in Washington County have similar stories, and I hope to relate as many as possible here. And if you are very fortunate, you have roots here as well. This web site is designed to help you in your search for your Washington County ancestors. And remember, this web site is constantly growing, so don't hesitate to offer your suggestions and requests. And if you would like to contribute to these pages, you are most welcome. Thank you for stopping by…Jim
