I am researching my family history and my ggrandfather's brother and his family moved to Kanasas sometime before 1880. In the 1880 Census, they lived in Deer Creek Twp, Phillips Co.; in the 1900 census, they were in Elm Creek, Morris Co.; in the 1910 census they lived in Valley and in the 1920 census lived in Isabel, both in Barber Co. The details I know are: James Gillis was born February 26, 1837, in Inverness, Quebec, Canada. According to the 1900 census, James immigrated to the U.S. in 1862 and he was naturalized in 1877. The 1910 census reports he came to the U.S. in 1861. James married Ellen A. Clough (b. January 1853 in Vermont) in Bloomfield, Essex County, VT in 1875. They had a daughter, Carrie Maud, born in 1876 in Quebec, Canada (her birth was registered in Bloomfield, VT). In 1880, James was farming and the family was living in Deer Creek Township, Phillips County, Kansas. His age is listed as 40 and Ellen’s as 27. Their daughter, Carrie M., is listed as 4 years old and they have boarder in their home, Katie Barnard, 5 years old and a farm laborer, George Hiss, who is 16. In the 1900 U. S. census the family was living in Elm Creek, Morris County, Kansas. James is listed as 63 years old living with his wife, Ellen, and a daughter, Pearl, born in Kansas in December 1886. Ellen reported in that census that she had birthed two children and they were both living. In the 1910 census, James was listed as a carpenter. They lived in Valley, Barber County, Kansas and were caring for two grand-daughters, Sada (4 yrs old) and Leila Ford (3 yrs old). In that census Ellen reported that she had birthed two children but none were living. Both granddaughters were born in Kansas as were both of their parents, so these were the daughters of James’ and Ellen’s daughter Pearl (Gillis) Ford. In the 1920 census, James and Ellen owned a home in Isabel, Barber County, Kansas. James was 83 years old, Ellen 67; Sadie and Leila were still living with them and they had an elderly man boarding in their home. James died 5/19/1921. I cannot find any other family members after the 1920 census; it is likely that Ellen died before 1930 (she would have been 77 in 1930) and possible that Sadie and Leila were married before 1930 (Sadie would have been about 24 and Leila about 23 in 1930). Looking for any further information on James, Ellen, Carrie, Pearl, Sadie, or Leila... burial information, obituaries, birth/marriage records... anything will help! Thank you
