According to WWII draft card for William Ellsworth Snell he was born Apr 1, 1883 in Clifton Kansas. That is in Washington Co.

In the 1885 Kansas state census I found one Snell family living in Clifton.
Dan Snell, b. 1857 Ill.
Jane, b. 1862 Ill
Eliz, b. 1883 Ks (Fem)
Pearly b. 1881 Ks (male)

I think the census taker got this wrong and/or the index is wrong. The Eliz. is hard to make out, definatly starts with an E though. I found in the 1895 a family with a Willie b. 1883 living in Independence, Montgomery Co.
Parents names are hard to make out but other children were, Purlia, b. 1885, Guy b. 1888, Fred b. 1892 and Babe b. Jan., this is a son. Both parents were born in Ill. father in abt 1856 and mother abt 1865

I think this Dan and Jane maybe your Williams parents. As I believe I found William in the 1910 calif census with wife Ollie. It states Williams parents were both born in Illinois.
