I am looking for possible relatives. My father's name was
Richard Eugene Gillett. His mothers name was Mary. I don't
know his father's first name. I think there was at least one
uncle who lived in Kansas at least until the mid 60's.
Mary's maiden name was McCullough (not sure of the spelling)
and she came from a large family. My dad was born in Emporia
in 1917. The story has been handed down to me that at one
time our name had an "e" on the end, but my grand-father or
great-grand-father wanted to distance himself from the rest
of the family for some reason, so had the "e" dropped. I
believe it was my grand-father; being in response to the
family not wanting him to marry Mary as she was part
American Indian. Also her family was rather poor and I think
my grand-father's family was wealthier. That's about all the
history I know. My dad settled in the Washington DC area
after WW II. He was an auto mechanic and I was born in 1953.
My mom's name was Cora Ellen Bernard.I have one younger
brother, Jody.
I know there are a lot of "Gilletts" in Kansas. I'm hoping
to find someone that is related and who can tell me
something of my ancestry on my dad's side. I'm curious as
to when the family came to the country and even what country
of origin we are.
