I am researching a murder that took place in Coffey County in 1925. One of the suspects (who is later cleared) is identified under many different names, including:

Sherman Stevens
Blackie Stevens (nickname)
Deacon Stevens (nickname)
Sherman Stephenson

He was African American and couldn't read or write, which probably accounts for the variations in the last name. I did find a marriage certificate for him. He is listed as:

S.H. Stephenson, age 31, of Independence, Kansas

He married a woman named Mary Graham in Burlington on April 13, 1923. This places his birth date in either 1892 or 1893, depending on where his birthday fell.

I checked with the County Clerk, and she couldn't find him in her records, but he may not have been born in Montgomery County.

Does anyone have any record of this man?

Thanks,
