I have done a community history of this area of Smith County and have a "Family Surname File" of people who lived in the area since 1871. I can send family info to you for the cost of the copies and the postage. The area I cover is: Seven miles north of the Highway 36 and KS Highway 8 intersection is the Old Highland School House. From this school house I go out six miles in all directions and cover families that lived in this area. I will share info, give you places your might also look, but I would like a copy of your family history to include in my file to share with future family history searchers. I also include info on Dr. Brewster Higley in this collection. Dr. Higley wrote the words to the song "Home on the Range" about this community in the early 1870's. The song is about our pioneer ancestors and their life on the open range as pioneers. We have a "HIGHLAND AREA AND HOME ON THE RANGE AREA" community reunion even numbered years (to enable you to go the Athol Reunion the same weekend). Our is the Saturday before Memorial Day, Athol's Reunion is the Sunday before Memorial Day. Both are pot luck picnics. Plans for these picnics are always posted in the Smith county Pioneers, Smith Center, KS a few weeks before Memorial Day Weekend. Everyone with a connection is welcome, bring a family heirloom to share with the "show and tell" part of our reunion.
