DEATH OF MRS. MAPES:

Martha Elizabeth, daughter of Noah and Mary Ann Brotherton, was born April, 12, 1856 at Chariton, Iowa and left for her heavenly home from the home of Norman at Horton, Kansas, October 18. 1945; aged 89 years, 6 months.' and 6 days. She was married to Benjamin Mapes September 28, 1873. To this union were born five children, Edna Alice Scott, Platteville, Colorado, Blanche Gertrude Greene, Souix City, Nebraska; Mattie D. Scott, Fort Collins, Colorado; Norman B. Mapes, Horton, Kansas and Roland V. Mapes, who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Mapes made their home for a short time in Michigan and Iowa and later moved to Nebraska. From there they came to Kansas where Mr. Mapes. took a timber claim in 1879, southeast of WaKeeney near Cedar Bluffs, where they resided until 1888 when they moved to Ogallah, making their home there until his death in 1916, and she until her age and health did not permit her longer to live alone. She spent some time with her daughters in Colorado, but for the last year of her life she lived with her son in Plainville, Kansas, moving to Horton with him in 1943. She was a sturdy pioneer going through all the struggle, of those early days to make and keep her family and home.

At the age of 14 she united with the Church of Christ and remained a firm believer until the end; was a faithful worker for her Christ as long as health permitted.

She has left many friends but as she often said she had out lived most of her early ones and was glad to join those who had gone on before. Funeral services, were conducted from the Niesley Funeral Home at Ellis, Kansas, Sunday afternoon, October 21 with Rev. Flowers officiating and burial in the Ogallah Cemetery.
