Atchison was a staging point for wagon trains Goods arrived there by boat on the Missouri river and was carried west by wagon train. By 1880 there were railroads but there were areas where the railroads did not reach. A teamster could have been one who drove a team on one of the wagon trains or it could be one who just drove teams locally.
