My name is Lisa Miles. I am a Ph.D. candidate in American History at the University of Kansas. I received a B.A. and an M.A. from Emporia State University. I am currently working on my dissertation. The topic is vigilantism and violence in the mid-19th Century American West. As a case study, I am examining the 1870 Douglass incident, involving the "798 Vigilantes."
William P. Hackney played a pivotal role in the events following the vigilante activity. I am hoping that someone has information concerning where Mr. Hackney's records might be. I am having no luck trying to get court records from El Dorado. It seems everything I need (if it still exists at all) is in a Catch-22 situation in storage in Hutchinson.
I sure would appreciate any assistance you might be able to give me. Thanks!
