I am only going to add to the confusion, but I thought I
might let you know I also had relatives of TATE/TAIT living
in Garnett, KS. No one seems to want to let loose of the
information about this family there. My father is Joseph
TAIT the son of Francis Joseph TATE/TAIT they lived in
Garnett, KS in the early 1930's until 1941 and they moved
to Humbolt, KS. My father had 2 uncles used both spellings
of the surname when signing legal documents. I have looked
in the old vital statistics on my grandfather's marriage to
my grandmother (Gertrude Mary ROECKERS) and some documents
have the surname spelling TATE and some TAIT. My father's
always known to write TAIT and that is what he carried down
to us 4 children. I can't find any information about my
great grandfather family except the tidbits my father has
told me and what I have accumulated. It is said that my
great-grandfather (first name unknown - TATE/TAIT) left my
great-grandmother (Mary Etta RILEY/REILLY) when the 3 boys
were young. We have proof of that, but I haven't gotten
down to the paying of legal documents much to dig for the
birth certificate of my great-grandfather yet. As the story
was handed down to my father....my great-grandfather
TATE/TAIT went to the state of TEXAS and no one ever heard
from him again.
Like I said, I am only adding to your confusion, but I am
at a stump myself. This family seemed to be drifters and
loaners who would live in one boarding house to another as
they travelled from state to state. My records and
information show that my GRANDFATHER-Francis Joseph
TATE/TAIT lived at one time in the following states:
South Dakota,
Iowa,
Missouri,
Kansas,
Oklahoma.... and who knows where else.
My grandfather was married prior to my marrying my
grandmother to a Dora Dean Hudson and they were living in
Missouri at that time. But my grandfather was courting my
grandmother in Kansas at the same time by correspondence.
Dora Dean Hudson had become deathly ill and when she passed
my grandfather went ahead and married my grandmother
leaving behind 2 children he had with Dora in Missouri with
her folks. Who knows.....
I have become very frustrated in searching this lineage. I
have kind of moved onto searching for my mothers side.
If you have heard of an Ezra Mathew TATE/TAIT please,
please let me know. I am in search of him. He is my
grand-uncle. He is my grandfather's brother. My dad last
talked with him back in 1972 or 1973 right before his
daughter Louise (TATE/TAIT) Spears supposedly moved him out
to Santee, CA. This is all hearsay. But it is a wish of my
fathers to know of the last resting place for him. He is
more interested in that than where his own grandfather lays
to rest.
I should list the 3 boys that my great grandparents had
together (they are in NO special order for we do not
exactly know which was born first between my grand-uncle
Ezra or my grandfather):
Ezra Mathew (possibly Matthew) TATE/TAIT
Francis Joseph TATE/TAIT
Samuel Dean (or Dean Samuel as some documents have it)
TATE/TAIT.

Now if none of this made sense it is understandable for I'm
in my middle 30's and trying to sift through. If you
understood than you are ahead of me.

Please contact me if you have any information on those that
I am in search...as I will contact you if I come across
information on your James W. HANCOCK/Emma TATE.

Thanks for letting me ramble.
