The GAR was the Grand Army of the Republic, men who were Union veterans of the Civil War. Very big in the west, my Great-great gfather was in on the beginning of it in IL, and was in chapters when he moved to Nebraska, Kansas, and finally Oklahoma. Hope that helps some.
