1870 census in Shirly Township lists a George Burgess, Martha Burgess, Frank Burgess age 2, and Catherine Cluggage. They are listed as farmers (I assume homesteaders as they have value listed for Real property). They can not be found on later census. My wife's grandfather, Frank Burgess is found on 1880 census in Linn County, Iowa living in household of John Harris, listed as 9 year old Waif. Family legend has Frank Burgess as a todler being on wagon that was attacked and father and mother being killed. He was left alive, asleep in the wagon and found and raised by the Harris family. Anyone know about any Indian attacks in Cloud County in early 1870's that could have killed the Burgess family?
