As a retiree in Hawaii, new to genealogical research, I'm trying to find out what happened to my gr grandfather, Alfred Harmon Smith, originally from Niagara Co, NY, who went west, young man, and was listed in the 1880 census as raising sheep in Eureka, together with his wife Anna E Smith, and 2 ch, Lillian Eliza (b. 1859) and Charles E. (born 1869). No mention of him and wife Anna until 1910, when Anna turns up -- but no Alfred H. -- living w/ Charles & wife in Spokane, WA. I've got more troubles finding out what happened to Lillian after she ran away from her husband and kids in 1897, but that's probably not a Kansas problem. How do I go about finding out about a sheep raiser in 1880, who probably had a few bucks and was a pillar of the community. Is there a genealogical society? Is there a local history? An archive of obituaries. Help. (Aloha)
