Here is the information I have gathered. Note that George W and Anna are in Atchison County, per the 1895 State of Kansas Census. See the link below. also, I have rechecked my notes and George W is not buried in Atchison County, based on the source I used. However this source excluded one cemetery in the City of Atchison. But I don't think he is there, as the family was in OK in 1900?

Here are some of the MAYFIELDs buried in Atchison County, Kansas. The book list 20 to 30 names, but most of them were born after 1900, so I did not include them. The source is “Cemetery Inscriptions of Atchison County, Kansas” by Don Ford, published in 1987. I did not get the page numbers, but it is an alphabetical listing.

Mary w/o WJ 18 July 1856 24y 9m 1d (MPC)
James F 1862 – 1939 (CWC)
Martha 1876 – 1933 (CWC, I assume she is James’ wife based on dates and burial location)
S.A.M. 1837 – 1907 (MPC) (Sarah A. Morris, second wife of William J)
W.J.M 1830 – 1903 (MPC)

Not sure whose these folks are but he may be related to William J, cousin? Or twin brother?

Elizabeth J, 15 Oct 1833 – 9 Feb 1919, 85y 3m 25d (RMC) (I assume she is the wife of James)
James R., 30 Mar 1830 – 21 July 1908, 78y 3m 21d (RMC)

CWC is Cummings (Woodview) Cemetery
MPC is Maple Grove Cemetery in Monvoria
RMC is Round Mound Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant Township

When you get death dates you can check for obituaries in the newspaper microfilms. Search at this link for the microfilm numbers. I find it best to just enter the county name and the dates of interest. The results page will then list all papers published in the county and microfilmed for the time period specified.

The Atchison County Genealogy society, located in the Atchison, KS public library has some obituary indices. However, I do not know which time periods they cover. I think one period is in the early 1900s and the other is in the mid 1900s, say 1950 or 1960.

The 1895 State of Kansas census has been indexed for Atchison County, KS and the index is on line. Look here as there are quite a few MAYFIELDs in Mt. Pleasant Township in this census.

A biographical sketch of W. J. MAYFIELD, published in 1883 in Cutler’s “History of Kansas” can be found at this link. You will need to scroll down a bit or search on MAYFIELD. It lists both wives and all 14 children, and who their mother was.
