I am searching for any information, newspapers, court records, etc., on Kate Bender who operated a "hotel/restaurant" near Independence. Passersby were lured to her establishment more by her voluptuous form than by her reputation as a good cook. Once served, a lone traveler would never check out. Instead, a conk on the head and a slit throat were the ultimate price of a room. Once the bodies' clothing was rifled for any valuables, they were then planted on the motel grounds. Excavations in 1873 revealed no fewer than eight bodies; one of which was that of a small girl who had been traveling with her father.
