VAN FOSSEN (Charles H. and Corline ARMSTRONG) Wyandot, Now Kansas City. From: - Treva L. Van Fossen (Feb 25, 1999)
Charles and Caroline (ARMSTRONG) VAN FOSSEN were included on the 1867 Wyondot tribal rolls. I think this census was a follow-up of the 1855 census which originally included the family as citizens, rather than as members of the Wyondot Nation. Yet, in this 1867 record, the census taker noted that the family rejected citizenship for inclusion on the tribal rolls. Four children were listed as follows: Elah (female), Lewis, Thomas A, and Francis(male). Were there any more children born after these? Specifically, did they also have a son named Charles? Charles H. VAN FOSSEN and a partner purchased material from a paper called the "Weekly Spy" in 1880. They used it to start their own paper, The Daily Evening Globe in Kansas City, Ks. Charles was well experienced and tenured in the news and print media when he made this investment.

He was an early settler of the Missouri Valley. He may be DJ Van Fossen's brother Charles. If so, he also has a brother named John. (DJ is of Ft. Scott, Bourbon County. Also a newspaper man, and realtor of that area. Had a short lived grocery store co-owned by brothers Charles and John.) If DJ is his brother, then Charles may have been born in one of these states: New York, Ohio, Michigan, or Indiana. John VAN FOSSEN had also lived in Wyondot County during the 1800's. Any info regarding Van Fossens in Kansas and Mo is appreciated. I am trying to find the parents of my g-grandfather Charles (m. to Emma Hentz) This Charles may be the link.

JARVIS (CHARLES & ELIZABETH JANE MARTIN) 339 North 10th, Kansas City, Kansas. From: - (Mar 2, 1999)
FOUND OUT AT AGE 52 THAT I WAS ADOPTED. Looking for information about Charles JARVIS born 1908 in Chicago. On June 17, 1932 married Elizabeth Jane MARTIN born 1911 in Chicago. Charles JARVIS worked as a Yardmaster with the Rock Island Railroad. On August 11, 1945, a baby girl was born in Bethany Hospital in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Her name at birth was Regina Lee Jarvis. Her birth certificate listed Charles Jarvis and Elizabeth Jane Martin as her parents. The mother stated on the birth certificate that she had given birth to two other children. On the birth certificate it stated that the mother's address was 339 North 10th Street. Checking city directories, this was the resident of Thomas E. Robertson or Robinson, who died in 1947, and Vena Robertson or Robinson who was listed as a nurse. State Department of Social Welfare records for Regina Lee Jarvis listed the mother's name as Mabel Jarvis at 1109 East 36th Street. Vena Robertson (Robinson) was listed in Social Services court records as the supposed aunt of Mabel Jarvis. In this record, they had reason to believe that parts of paper work records had been falsified. John Carr was listed as the attorney for Gladys Marie Woods Justice. Another birth certificate was found in the possession of adopted mother with the same birth certificate number dated the same date listing Gladys Marie Woods Justice as being the parent of Sharon Kay Jarvis same date of birth as Regina Lee Jarvis. It looks like this birth certificate might have been a forged birth certificate because the name of the registrar is the same but it doesn't appear to have been signed by the same person. There was no doctor's signature and some lines had been crossed out. The signature on this birth certificate was definitely Gladys Marie Woods Justice. Some information on this birth certificate appeared to have been falsefied. Regina Lee Jarvis was taken home from the hospital by Gladys Marie WOODS JUSTICE, born 10 September 1908 who at the time was married to Homer JUSTICE. There address was 1109 South 36th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Apparently, Elizabeth Jane Jarvis also went home with this lady because a court record showed that she was living with Gladys Justice. The final petition for adoption was made April 14, 1949 by Gladys Marie WOODS JUSTICE who adopted Regina Lee JARVIS and she was given the name Sharon Kay JUSTICE. Gladys also had a brother named Kenneth Woods who lived in Wyandotte County, KS. Other spouses of Gladys Woods were: Joseph K. Brewster, married April 20, 1948, who was a building contractor; Dale Kitchen; Joe Couch and Slim Tadlock. Any information about this family would be appreciated.

BIRTH CERTIFICATE FOR SHARON KAY JUSTICE was found in her adopted mothers papers.
DATE OF BIRTH - Same as above
SAME BIRTH CERTIFICATE NUMBER
SAME REGISTRATION DATE
SAME REGISTRAR's NAME but appears to have been forged.
PARENT's NAME: GLADYS MARIE WOODS JUSTICE.
It looks like this birth certificate might have been forged because the name of the registrar is the same but it doesn't appear to have been signed by the same person. There was no doctor's signature or name on this document. The signature of parent was definitely the signature of Gladys MARIE WOODS JUSTICE.

According to the Kansas State Department of Social Welfare records Regina Lee Jarvis was taken from the hospital by Gladys Marie Woods Justice. Regina Lee JARVIS' mother's name was listed as MABEL JARVIS at 1109 East 36th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Hospital records show that Gladys Marie Justice paid for the expenses.

Hello. I am looking for any info on Joseph Gorsick, and/or Mary Ann Cautrell (wife) who lived at 641 Tauromee, KCK in 1949. Mary Ann is my grandmother, another married name before Gorsick was Jones. Am also interested if anyone knows a Joseph Wolf family who lived in the same area between 1940 and 1949. There was a Joseph (?) Wolf who was married to my mother in the 40's. They had a son, Joseph, who was born between 1943-1946. They may have had a second son, a little younger than Joseph. Joseph Wolf, the baby, is my half-brother. I would really love to know about all above. I have never met my half-brother(s) and would love to know if he/they are ok. I know he/they were adopted when young (approx. 2-3 yrs. old. Please help me - I have been looking for the half-brothers and info on Gorsicks for a long time. I don't want to intrude on them at all, but if any of them would like to meet with me, or need any info about their family, I would be very happy to oblige. Thank you! Carol

GRIEPENSTROH (Louis and Rosina FROEHLCIH) Wyandotte County 1870-1875. From: - Bart Gripenstraw (Mar 16, 1999)
My Griepenstroh family lived in Wyandotte County from 1870-1875. They were previously in Massac County, IL where Louis Griepenstroh (1835-1926) worked for the railroads. In the 1870 US Census it states that his occupation while living in Wyandotte was "boilermaker". Questions:

  1. What railroad would he have worked for in 1870-1875 in Wyandotte Co?
  2. They moved to San Jose, California in 1875. Would they have gone by train or wagon?
  3. How long did a train ride take from Wyandotte to San Jose? How much did it cost? How much "stuff" could they take along?
Thanks, Bart Gripenstraw
