"Jason H. Geeding passed away at the home of Robert Creech at Batchtown last Saturday morning after a short illness. He was passed seventy-seven year of age.
After the death of his wife several months ago, he found a welcome and good care in the Creech home. He was crippled and the infirmities of old age rendered him almost helpless.
Mr. Geeding was the last of the generation of Geedings in Calhoun county. Back in the seventies, a large family consisting of his parents and their children resided in Point Precinct.
About forty-three years ago, he and his wife with their two daughters moved from Beechville to Batchtown and bought tow acres of ground of A. C. Wilson and built a home. Their daughters were educated in the home school. The eldest died in young womanhood. The younger daughter taught school two years before she married a young business man of Quincy, Illinois. She died in that city shortly after her marriage.
Mr. Geeding spent most of his life at Batchtown as a day laborer at small wages. His wife was a dressmaker and the two managed to maintain a home and have plenty of the necessaries of life. They were never able to have luxuries, and did not seem to care for them. The father and husband was the last of the family to answer the call. About two months ago, Mr. Geeding had a gravestone placed at the burial lot in Wilson cemetery where the parents and two daughters are buried, according to arrangements planned by the mother over thirty years ago.
Mr. Geeding ate a light breakfast Friday morning. He complained of slight discomfort the day before and was in bed part of the time. The doctor was called Friday morning and found the patient stricken with paralysis. He lapse into unconsciousness and id not revive.
Rev. H. Glaten, former pastor had charge of the funeral Monday afternoon. He was assisted at the church and at the cemetery by the Methodist choir. David L. Forbush of Winfield was funeral director." -- Calhoun Herald, 05 Oct 1933

Surname Variants

GEEDING is an Anglicized German surname. The family came from Maryland (specifically the Frederick / Washington / Charles County area), which was a major center of 18th-century German Palatinate immigration to the American colonies. The original German form is uncertain but family research has produced two working hypotheses: Geithing or Guding. Neither has been confirmed against a Frederick County MD church record yet, but the surname's persistent variation across decades of records is consistent with American clerks rendering a German pronunciation differently each time.
Spelling variants attested in records:
