Ft. Leavenworth, oldest continuously active fort west of the Appalachians
Leavenworth County, was established in 1855 as one of the original 33 Kansas Territory counties by the first Territorial Legislature. The county was named for Henry Leavenworth, a general in the Indian Wars who established Fort Leavenworth in 1827.
Leavenworth County is comprised of 10 townships and 3 independent cities. Smaller cities and towns in Kansas are included within the surrounding township. Cities of the first and second class (generally, those with more than 2,000 inhabitants) are administratively separate and independent of any township.
County Government: Leavenworth County
Note: The Leavenworth County Courthouse was destroyed on March 22, 1911.
County Seat: City of Leavenworth
Townships (10): Alexandria, Delaware, Easton, Fairmount, High Prairie, Kickapoo, Reno, Sherman, Stranger, and Tonganoxie.
Independent Cities (3): Bonner Springs, Lansing, and Leavenworth.
Other Cities within Townships (5): Basehor, Bonner Springs (part), Easton, Linwood, and Tonganoxie
