Salem, a hamlet of Jewell county, is located in Richiand township about 10 miles northeast of Mankato, the county seat, and about the same distance east of Burr Oak. It gets mail by rural delivery from Isbon. Salem was laid off in 1872 and was at one time one of the important little towns of the county. The population in 1910 was 51.
