The following Family Stories were provided by Judy Lynn, 20 July 2003.  “History of the Henry McWhorter Family of New Jersey and West Virginia", written by Minnie S. McWhorter, and published in 1948 by Charleston Printing Company, Charleston, West Virginia.

John Dexter Ward was my Great-Great-Uncle, brother of my Great-Grandmother, Amanda Celina (Ward) Flesher.

Life Sketch of John Dexter Ward

John Dexter Ward, a Civil War veteran, was one of eleven children born to Judson and Margaret (McWhorter) Ward. He was born Apr. 18, 1841, in Harrison County, Virginia (now W. Va.), where he was reared.

On Aug. 11, 1862, he enlisted in Company B, 15th Regiment of W. Va. Infantry, and was in active service until June, 1865. He participated in numerous battles during the struggle between the states. His company was known in the army as “The Mountain Boys.”

At the battle of Appomattox, Mr. Ward was in plain sight of the scene in which General Lee handed his sword to General Grant. After the close of the war, on Oct. 2, 1866, Mr. Ward married Harriett Williams, and to them were born nine children, seven of whom married and reared families.

Mr. Ward, with his family, moved to Kansas, and his descendants are to be found in South Dakota, Colorado, Arizona, and all through the West. He died in Scott City, Kansas, Apr. 5, 1936, at the age of ninety-five years. His wife preceded him several years.

Upon his death, a military funeral was given him. A large group of ex-service men attended the military funeral given him in Scott City. It was a beautiful service accorded the aged veteran.

As the echoes of the three volleys fired over his open grave died down, from a distance came the sounds of the bugle—it was taps to one of the very few left of those brave men who offered their lives to their country in time of need.
