Obituary of MARTHA (ROGERS) ANDERSON

Atchison Daily Globe, February 18, 1912:



Mrs. Martha Anderson died this morning at 3:10 after an illness which confined her to the house for five years, and kept her bedfast since last August. Her death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Signor, 914 North Ninth Street, with whom she has made her home for eighteen years and whose devotion was a comfort to her declining years. Mrs. Anderson celebrated her 85th birthday last January. She was a widow for fifty-two years. Her husband died en route to Kansas from their home in Indiana. His death and burial occurred at Winterset, Iowa, and her remains will be placed beside him there. Five years ago Mrs. Anderson was stricken with paralysis. She grew gradually worse and her death was due to the complications, which have arisen since she was first stricken. She is survived by four grown children: H. R. Anderson, Mrs. Bert Signor, A. B. Anderson, all of Atchison, and Mrs. N. E. Bennett of Abilene. At 4 o'clock this afternoon brief funeral services were held at the Signor home, after which the remains were carried to the train, and Mrs. Signor and her brothers H. R. and A. B. Anderson, accompanied them to Winterset, where the funeral and interment will occur tomorrow.

Mrs. Martha Anderson died on last Sunday evening at her home in Atchison, Kansas, and the body was brought here and burial at Stringtown this forenoon. The deceased was an aunt of Ed. Chase of this place and of Mrs. Allen Applegate of Cedar Rapids and was one of the early settlers of the Stringtown neighborhood. The husband died here in 1859. She was 87 years old on last New Year's Day and on that day suffered a stroke of paralysis, which hastened her death.

Mrs. D. W. Ayres Dies

Mrs. Laura B. Ayres, 78, widow of D. W. Ayres, who for many years was a prominent restaurant man in Atchison, died at 6 o'clock last evening at her home, 816 South Fifth street, following a long illness. Her condition was critical for the past three weeks. Mrs. Ayres was a resident of this city for 75 years. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon from the residence. The Rev Chilton Bowles, pastor of the Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt Vernon cemetery. Harrouff & Buis are in charge of the arrangements. A daughter of Tom Duncan Tarrant and Martha Tarrant, Laura Tarrant was born at Harrisonville, Mo., November 20, 1858. In 1861 her parents removed to Atchison and she lived here the remainder of her life. She was married to D. W. Ayres on May 7, 1888. As a bride she went to the home at 816 South Fifth street and lived there continuously for 49 years. Mr. Ayres and his brother, James Ayres conducted a restaurant on South Third street for many years. D. W. Ayres died in 1933. A devout member of the Presbyterian church, Mrs. Ayres taught in the Sunday school of the church for many years and among her early pupils were Ed and Art Lukens and the late Dr. Charlie Johnson. Surviving are two sisters. Mrs. B. A. Wetherill, Sand Springs, Okla., and Miss Stella Tarrant, Kansas City, and a brother Oliver Tarrant, St Louis, Mo.

Death Takes D. W. Ayres

End Comes at Age of 79 to Well Known Retired Restaurant Man Daniel Webster Ayres, 79, well known retired restaurant proprietor, died at 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning at his home, 816 South Fifth street. Mr. Ayres was stricken Saturday with a heart attack and never rallied. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon at the Ayres residence. The Rev. C. K. Davis, pastor of the Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will take place in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Harouff & Buis are in charge. Ayres brothers' restaurant was for years an Atchison institution and both Dan Ayres and his brother James T. Ayres were known to hundreds of people in Atchison, the surrounding territory and among the traveling public. Dan Ayres was born February 17, 1853 in Lauden (sic) county, Va. and came to Atchison in April 1879. He immediately entered the restaurant business here, locating at Third and Main streets and in 1884 erected a building on South Third street to which he moved and went into partnership with his brother. For 24 years this partnership endured until the business was sold to the late Sam Gore in 1908. Mr. Ayres married Miss Laura Belle Tarrant, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom Tarrant of Atchison, May 7, 1889. In September of that year they moved into the home at 816 South Fifth street, which Mr. Ayres had built and in which he died. The widow is the only immediate survivor. In retirement Dan Ayres was intensely devoted to his wife and home as he had been all his married life.
