Mrs. Bertha Wycliffe, died at the Medicine Lodge hospital at an early hour Sunday morning, January 31, 1937, from a gun shot wound, self-inflicted. Mrs. Wycliffe had been in poor health for some time, and had become despondent, and to this is attributed her action. With her in the home at the time of the shooting was her brother, Earl Edwards, who had made his home with her for the past several years. Mrs. Wycliffe numbered many friends among the residents of Medicine Lodge in whose homes she was often employed, and who counted her an unusually efficient and courteous helper. Her action came as a shock to those who knew her as she had never spoken much about her ill health, and no one realized her despondency.Bertha Lunette Edwards was born at Pratt, Kansas to Allan C. and Mary Frances Edwards, on February 10, 1890, and departed this life at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, January 31, 1937, at the age of 46 years, 11 months and 20 days. She came with her parents to Medicine Lodge in 1906, and attended the public schools of this city.
She was married to John R. Wycliffe but later divorced, and since had made her home with her brother, Earl. She was a member of the Methodist church in Pratt. She is survived by her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Martin of Hutchinson and Mrs. Bessie Wells of Wichita; five brothers, Wm. Henry, Earl and Everett Edwards, all of Medicine Lodge, and Peyton Edwards of Galveston, Texas; besides other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Forsyth Funeral home in this city, in charge of Rev. F. H. Hayward, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and interment was made in Highland cemetery.
