Query: I am seeking information on a Joseph BOWERS, born 1847 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the youngest son of George and Hannah (Tomer) BOWERS. A family Bible entry lists his name, his birth, reference to CW duty (that I can find no record for), and gives his death as "about 1912 in Fort Scott, KS". In a biographical sketch, my great-grandfather states that his brother "moved west to Kansas about 1880, and was unmarried in Ft. Scott (Bourbon County) Kansas at the time of his death about 1912. A family court document in Allegheny Courthouse (Pittsburgh, PA) in 1889 lists Joseph as one of the brothers, but states "his whereabouts unknown". I can not find him in Federal census records for Bourbon County ... are state census records available from 1880-1915? Can anyone suggest references that might help us find out more about our mystery ancestor, and where he might be buried?
